2005 subaru impreza stereo
Hi All, my friend has an '05 impreza and the speakers are atrocious. anyone know what size the fronts and rears are?
and know of any strange/unusual/challenging issues with installing them? I already know how to pop off a door panel by finding the screws, and clips, and just wiggling the door panel off. over the lock or door handle.
and a quick fleabay search shows the STI had components - are those a direct plug-and-play application in the impreza? how do the tweeters hook up, and are they any better than the OEM impreza speakers? in fleabay pics, teh OEM impreza speaker looks like a shitty dual-cone paper whizzer thing...while the STI speaker looks like a dedicated midbass.

hmm...crutchfield says 6-1/2" for the front, but it doesn't fit any aftermarket speaker size exactly
I may just go for the STI speakers since I could get them for $30, they're components, and I know they'll bolt right up...I'm in a living situation where I don't have a garage, and just some basic hand tools. Can't and don't want to buy $100 of tools just to fab some brackets.
I'm going to make an identical thread at the forum garandman posted, but anyone know if those STI components are plug and play? or do I need a separate crossover and OEM amp for them?
and anyone know of any barriers to front speaker installation?
Re: 2005 subaru impreza stereo
The doors are real thin... If you take an other average car apart compared to those you will understand... Maybe to save weight due to awd?
But 5 1/4 fit easy .... 6 1/2 fit with spacer
Most of those have a plastic oem speaker... You can cut out the surround and magnet from the speaker and use it as a spacer... Or turn the oem speaker upside down and hit the magnet with a hammer hard ;)
Re: 2005 subaru impreza stereo
Depending on the year and model Subaru sometimes the speakers have adapter brackets built into them and sometimes they're separate, either way it's annoying due to the thinness of the doors. Polk and Infinity make slim 6.5" speakers that I've used in the past.

I don't know about the STi but I know the WRX speakers are no better.
Re: 2005 subaru impreza stereo
Going with OEM auto manufacturer speakers for the most part you'll get minimal speakers at best. You'll probably run into some weird calibration or impedance as well...
Scroll through the Crutchfield site - pick out the speakers you want. Even if you go down in size you'll probably go way up in sound performance. The best example I have is the OEM junk I pulled out of my old Explorer - they were paper coned 5x7 (ish) odd shape cheap... I put in 4 1/2" round with composite cones and the sound was worlds better.
Find the speakers you want - go to Amazon to find the best price. BUT - Order the adapter plates and wiring harness from Crutchfield. It'll cost you a few bucks, but it'll save you a bunch a jerking around and they include the instructions for how to get them in...
