Anyone know what legal issues there could be if I drive up and get it?
Also, what fees / taxes would I be liable for??

Its been a while since ive dont it but it can be done. Usually going through a dealer makes it much easier and that was always the way i took. I do remember the bike has to be legal here to begin with. No rgv500 and the such.

A vehicle may be temporarily imported for testing, demonstration, or racing purposes. A vehicle may be permanently imported for show or display. Written approval from DOT is required and should be obtained before the vehicle is exported from the foreign country to the U.S.

Paper work was not bad. There are a few forms to fill out. I have them saved on my computer at work. I can put the link up Monday if you want. Don't bother calling any one. No one I talked to would give me a strait answer.
It doesn't matter if its for the track or not. If it was built as a street bike it must be brought in as a street bike. If it was built as a track/race bike then you can bring it in as such. Edit: I guess you can do it, it must of been much easier for me to do it as a street bike it didn't bother with the written approval part.

I imported a Ducati street bike in street trim to turn into a race bike. I never registered it but I wanted to have a title for it so I did all the paper work. Ducati made all North American bike to the same spec. My bike has a Canadian tag and the US tag. Maybe the bike you are looking at is the same. That would make it easy.
When I get to work Monday I'll post what I have. I spent alot of time going over all the Gov websites trying to put everything together. When I got to the border I had all the paperwork ready to go. Other then having to search for the EPA tag in 10deg weather it went smooth.
Here are the there forms I needed to bring my bike back. It was an 04 Ducati streetbike in full street trim. Check them out, there's info on what you need on them. You may need more or less but it should help out.
tax was 3% for the first 1,000 then 2.4 for the rest.
