Advice well-made used elliptical machine
Wore out my wife's 12 year old Pro-Form (spent the first 9 of those years as a place to hang clothing). I'm looking for something used to replace it with. I am kinda rough on exercise gear, so ruggedness is more important than features. Any recommendations or brands to avoid?
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
Just bought one for my GF for Christmas.
Did a TON of research as some of the ellipticals out there can turn into a piece of junk. Not only is the brand important but even the models within them
I ended up getting the Nortictrack E 5.7
http://www.nordictrack.com/webapp/wc...1_19053_186419
Her and myself have been using it for the past month and its great.
From my research almost all brands have at least 1 good model within them, but some of the others are lemons.
Really depends on your price range too...

Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
Precor. it wasn't cheap, but it's held up great for the past ~11 years. really well built and smooth.
when we were looking, we were told to avoid the ones with moving handlebars. you pay more but dont really get much benefit exercise wise.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
My wife wants to sell her's to get a bike or something. It is a SOLE brand, not sure exactly what model but it is smooooth and gym quality.

I could get ya some info & Pictures if interested.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
I have a 'Smooth Fitness' elliptical behind me here in the man cave. I wanted a treadmill, but the missus swore she'd use an elliptical if I bought that, refused to use a treadmill.
Needless to say I should of bought what I wanted.
But the elliptical is pretty solid. Not 'gym quality', but then not priced that way either.
My biggest beef is the heart rate monitor/electronics suck. For the price, I don't know why I am surprised.

I looked at those, sure are expensive... Nice though.

I will find out tonight when I get home. If you like it im sure we can work something out. Not looking to get rich on it. Just want to change it up with something different.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
Just curious,
Why can't you just go running on a trail or the streets ?

PM me with details when you get a chance.
Now to convince the wife to get another (not really that hard). She's pissed that I wore it out and using "female logic" to argue against replacing it. Apparently, it's better to own exercise gear and not use it than it is to get full value from it by wearing it out (beyond reasonably-priced repair) by using it all the time and staying (sorta) in shape...

I do, I have awesome routes around my house and hike (5-10 miles), run (3 miles), or bike (20-30 miles) 4-7 days a week, weather permitting. I live right around the corner from Pawtuckaway State Park and it's a great place to play.
When the weather sucks, I work out indoors and have really grown to enjoy using the elliptical machine combined with other exercises. Sometimes I hike and use the elliptical on the same day since both are so easy on my knees.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
You can burn more calories in 25 mins of circuit training than it takes to burn in 2 hours on an elliptical. They are utterly useless unless your knees are crap.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
Good answer.
Just wondering if you were the type to say
" But running.... its........ ionno not like what you do... you use the eliptical because its designed to burn fat....and stuff....running doesnt do that "
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
subscribed...might look into one for the gf...she's had a couple knee surgeries
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
I'm looking for the misses as well.

I don't have a circuit in my house. It's just not big enough. Funny though, when I use the elliptical, it's pretty intense and I stop at the half way point to do push ups, sit ups and such, then get back on the elliptical for the rest of the workout. I lost 60 lbs a couple of years ago (and kept it off) so it must be burning some calories...

Yeah I can see that if you are really fat. :P
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
my mom picked up one of these after shopping around for a while...i tried it a couple times...it's pretty smooth but i'll stick to running...i'd say it comes down to what you want to spend and how much space you want to take up which will narrow down your choices by being either front or rear drive...i guess the rear drive models are "better" from what i have been reading in consumer reports...better balanced, more stable and more natural running feel...maybe why they have them in most gyms...either way i still need to find one that's more reasonably priced and probably just go new...sears seems to have a lot of them

Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
We've got a Kettler Cross XT purchased 8? years ago and used almost daily,
http://www.ellipticals411.com/Kettle...s/Cross_XT.php
and are very happy with it. It's made in Germany, heavy, smooth, rugged, well built. The arm workout is a plus and makes a noticeable difference in my experience.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
Finally found a good deal and bought one. Got a 2008 Sole E95 for $250. Very nice machine.
Re: Advice well-made used elliptical machine
That's a good deal. We have a Sole E55 I think it is. The auto adjust motor for the incline just gave out, but it's been used, so just some maintenance.
