How do you stay neighborly?
I'm wondering how to stay neighborly and not cause world war III with my next door neighbors. The issue I'm having is they're slowly moving their crap onto my land. My land goes around the back side of their house. They basically have about 50' of yard off the back of their house and then it turns into my land. About a year and a half ago a small (8x10) shed of theirs got moved partially onto my land. I never said anything because I didn't want to stir up crap. Then over the middle of the summer they raked out an area of my land and put one of those EZ-up style screened in tents about half on my land. Again, I didn't fuss over it because I figured it would come down once winter came, but it was ticking me off none the less. Now, this afternoon they moved an older ugly 35' travel trailer onto my property. Of the 35' length, I'd guess that about 25' of it is on my land. The trailer was parked in their front yard and they must have thought it was trashing up the look of their house so they moved it to the back, on MY property.
I'm wondering how others would confront their neighbors in hopes of not pissing them off and causing a war. I mean they're not very concerned about pissing me off it seems. I feel I'm being taken advantage of.

ask them politely if they are aware of where the property line was, and that you notice they may be unsure of its location. it could be an honest error, or they could be douchenuggets, but you won't know til you ask.

Tell them you might have to have your property surveyed for (think up this part) and they need to move those things so there's no confusion.

We're sort of friendly with them. Well..., my girlfriend is sort of friendly with the woman that lives over there. She has made a comment to my girlfriend about their invisible dog fence wire possibly being on our property and this camper goes way beyond the fence wire.

What the fuck, man? Just go fuckin' tell 'em their shit's on your property and you'd like it moved. I mean, be diplomatic about it & all that happy shit. But be firm too and tell 'em it's gotta stop. I don't see what the dilemna is really...

I know what you're saying Stoneman but I just don't want to open a can of worms for myself. They're our only neighbor and their house is about 400-500 feet from mine. I'd hate to have them leaving their obnoxious dogs out to bark non stop or whatever else they could do to tick us off.

Agree with Mazdagrl, ask them one day if they know where the property line is. Their reaction will let you how "neighborly" they want to be.

This. They will quickly dictate the level of the problem you have with whatever answer they give you. If they simply say no, point out that their things are on it, so you figured they didnt know. if they agree to move it ....which they should..then problem solved...if they continue with crap.. then act accordingly.

For what it is worth, you need to advised them as to the property line. For one, they either are not aware of the property line or clearly chose to ignore it. Based on your previou statements the later seems to hold true. I'd play as though you don't know that they know what the property line is and say something along the lines that they probably haven't realized that their stuff is on your property. If you don't tell them they will just choose to ignore it and next thing you know you have a junk yard on your property.

Aren't there laws noting that if they use and 'maintain' the land without complaint from you for long enough, it becomes theirs?

Tell them you are going to put up a fence this weekend and they need to move their stuff. Then go mark your line with spraypaint.

Lol. we actually have the land survey. It was surveyed back in 2006 and I can find all the pins.

Be nice. Tell them you've noticed it. Tell them it bothers you. Ask politely if they will move it.
No reason to make an enemy.

As a surveyor, I run into this ALL the time, a good share of the surveys I do are initiated by a clash of life styles between neighbors
all I can say is good fences make good neighbors, if you don't have fences, walk your boundaries once a year at minimum, make sure markers are easily recoverable. if you want to keep a clear line, trim the brush back, if you don't, next year you may not find the line
