Zombie, I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago. Found a steal on a 2008 DR at the end of the season which had some of the mods that I wanted. Ended up needing a bunch more work - tires, clutch, chain, sprockets, etc....So, I ended up putting another $1500 into it just to get it setup and to functional level. I love the bike, but in retrospect should have done what e30addict says which is to get a newer bike that already is setup. You should have no problem with a first generation KLR to fill your budget. There is a significant difference in weight and size between the two. I find $3500 is the sweet spot for a DR in good condition and already setup.
