Alright, lets hear it. I wanna know who likes what TYPES of beer.
None of this "I like Newcastle". No, tell me what type.
Light beers? Dark beers? Amber? Wheats? Bocks? Stouts? IPA's? Porters? Ales?
Do you like them hoppy? Malty? Dark Malt? Light Malt?
Types of beers can also include Irish Red's, Ockotberfest's, Winter Ale's, Flavored beers, etc
NO BEER. Just mixed drinks, and stuff like Smirnoff ICe. One of my favorite is Red Bull mixed with absolute vodka! :drool:
I like most beers, and I try to switch it up every so often... You only have so much time and so many beers to try....
I don't drink that much maybe a 6pack a month in winter, and most 5 in summer

so we have to stick to the budget and forget our tastes.

I like both hoppy and malty beers. On the very hoppy side, you can't beat a Dogfishead 60 Minute IPA. On the malty side, you have to love the mouthfeel and pure malt wallop of Scotch Ales or Oatmeal Stouts.
On the flipside, my absolute favorite beers are the Belgians... Anything from a nice crisp farmhouse golden ale, like Omegang brewery's Hennepin, to an awesome Dubble/Tripel (quite partial to Westvleterren, but thats hard to come by, so Chimay/Westmalle will have to do)
Speaking of BEER, are you coming to the Extreme Beer Fest?

Besides, you gotta see it from my point of view. Go to beer festival, try lots of beer, pay $30.
Go to work for an hour, drink lots of beer, get paid $30.
With the money they charge to let you into that thing, it should be free samples for all vendors. The whole point is to try MANY different beers, not just 5 unless you wanna shell out mucho dinero. Should be free with admission!
My favorites:
With hot food, like indian food or some kickin hotwings, IPA's all the way. The hoppier, the better.

I like dark beers(Guiness is my fav) but because of the carbs and I feel full when I drink them I stick to the piss...

Yeah, the thing with that fest though, is all the beers are way top shelf beers, like $12 a sixer or $9/705ml, kind of beers... Even the Sam Adams fests (where you only get Sam Adams beer) are $10 at door, and like $4 a beer (full beer of course, not sample cups)...Quote:

In any case, to brew some of the types of beers that will be served there requires wayyyy more than the price of admission in ingredients (try a barley wine at 18 lbs of malt extract at $4 a lb ($80 to brew 5 gallons including hops, yeast, malt extract) vs $22 door price and spend $16 more on tickets to get to sample 25 4 ounce samples of the best beer money could buy or you could brew ;))
This is beer economics 101 :) I figure for $38 bux I will be able to drink myself silly on some damn fine beers... if you work that out, its like $1.50 for each 4 oz sample. Or its like buying a $6 pint... not that out of the range of reasonability.. hehe... beer
In any case, with 20% ABV beers on draft, you can bet I'll be getting the biggest beer bang for my buck.
I went to a beer fest when I lived in Raleigh...$18 at the door and it was all you could drink....it was a beautiful thing...except I beat teh shit out of one of my best friends...but thats a story for another time..

anything but bud... beer is not supposed to be made with rice first of all and second the bud mud the next morning i can always do without. Down with bud... they are the yankees of beer and i hate everything they stand for!!!

I'll second the Double Bock being the best thing Sam Adams has put out. I have yet to try the Utopas, though.
Personally I have many fav's. It all depends on the season, food and of course freshness. One of the best beers I ever had was fresh Budvar in Prague..... absolutely delicious...nothing like any pils I've ever had here. Franconia Notches Grail ale on cask is really good and a local favorite of mine. Redhook Blackhook porter is an under rated tasty brew. Victory Hop Devil, Tucher hefe-weizen, ahh the list goes on and on. Some good old standards for me are Sierra Nevada Pale and Saranac Amber lager.
Beer fests are OK to try lots of small samples but for me you have to consume a full pint before you can really decide if you like it. It can also get very annoying when they are packed like a frat party with lots of stinky drunk people.
Homebrewing is cool, and very affordable once you go all grain. i.e. $0.50 a pound for malt.

i usually tend to like dark beers,and an occasional porter...the vermont longtrails and magic hat brews are prettty good...the pub at work serves woodstock inn brews.....the redrack ale and weasel wheats are pretty good too,,,,i tend to like variety!!!

I prefer the dark stuff too... it's nice that I can leave my beer in the fridge and nobody will touch them because nobody else likes what I drink :) Sams are always good and I try to make it a point to try a new beer everytime I drink. I don't drink too often but I love a good dark beer in the winter!
.50 a lb for malt??!?! Where the hell do you get that price? I pay $50 when I buy a 50lb sack o' malt (mostly Belgian pale malt that I buy in bulk), and thats like $1 a lb for bulk...Quote:

(can't really do a full mash on the stovetop with 40 Qt pot)...

Oh yeah I forgot they (homebrew shops) really mark up the malt! I pay less than $0.50/# for the specialty stuff and about .25/# for the base malts. I guess $1/# is about right for HBing.Quote:

I think I should get more active in brewing my own beer. Every time I go in to work at the brewery, I get hungry. The smell of half a ton of mash makes me wanna eat!

PS. Anyone who wants a gallon or so of free beer can come over, I haven't been keeping up with my beer quote so I need to lighten the keg a bit. It's Wachusett Winter Ale.

I brew my own root beer too! Very strage taste, more like Moxy than root beer, but rediculously addictive.
Yeah, I've done a few ginger beers and root beers, but they don't make me nearly as happy as my homebrewed belgian wit, or my abbey style tripel...
And the bottles are more of a bitch to clean after use as well... sugary syrupy... eek.
At some point, those few of us on here who brew should get together to share a few homebrews :) or maybe even an NESR learn to brew day....
I can offer a brew tour for anyone interested. A couple of pints and I'm ready to chat/taste beer all night.
My favorites are Long Trail (any of them, except double bag is my favorite)...Also, Shipyard Export Ale is on the top of my list as well!:drool:
