WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Man, has my internet speed been erratic. On "good" days, I see download speeds of 25mbps down, 3-4mbps up.
On "bad" days, like today, I see only 8mbps down and .1-.2mpbs up. I can't even upload a 100kb photo to Craigslist. It times out.
There are a lot of variables, which I have eliminated. I have a leased Motorola cable modem, which is wired to a Vonage Motorola router, which is wired to a D-Link Wireless N router.
I have eliminated all of the routers as the culprits by hooking the cable modem directly to my desktop and running tests, which show the same numbers as using my Mac, which uses wireless N.
Every time I call Comcast and they send someone out, they say it's my hardware. But the hardware doesn't change. Just usage by others in the condo complex I live in.
Is anyone else having similar issues?

Usually mine is very fast... I am having issues today... I had issues a couple days ago.... Just to slow... Three different computers, wireless or ethernet... It goes away in like an hour of so..

Yep. Comcast been problematic here too this past week or so.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Same here. They must be working on lines or something.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
The last time the tech was out here, he noticed that the modem I have is an older model, so I may bring mine in for a trade at a service center to see if that has ANY effect.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
I have Verizon and it has been hit or miss for the past week

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Comcast is spending on their money on buying NBC... why fix anything else

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Oh thank God! I was thinking it was just us :mope:
We've got Comcast here at the house and yeah, the internet has been super iffy for the last few weeks.
Earlier this evening we were having issues with the connection so I went to www.pingtest.net on both PC's here at the house.... on both PC's pingtest graded our connection with a D or an F.... 10 minutes later we were getting A's and B's :mope:
Right now on my PC:
http://www.pingtest.net/result/5190016.png
and it's getting worse.... 15 minutes ago it was fine
It was showing over 400ms on the other PC 5 minutes ago :wtf:

my verizon has been fine however when i was visiting my buddy at his college the internet was hit or miss. If there were not to many people on he would pull 15down 5 up but once everyone started logging on it got retarded

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
I had issues with Comcast because I had too many TV's hooked up to my line. I bought a line amplifier and it 's been pretty nice since. This is what I got...

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
I used to have comcast the first year I moved into my condo. Constantly had speed issues. On top of that I hated how they capped you at 250GB bandwidth per month. Switched to Verizon Fios the SECOND it became available in my condo community. Solid speeds all the time. Even between 5-6pm when utilization is high, my througput doesn't go down that much.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Oreo why'd you ping Montreol and Albany?
-
Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Reset your modem. I had same problems and that cleared it all up. Make sure you hit and hold the reset button for 15 second not just unplug it because most of the comcast modems have a battery back up.

It pinged 3 different servers before doing the test and those were the fastest ones it could connect to at the time.

hmmmm Maybe those damn Comcast turtles hacked our cable!

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Comcast sucks lately for me as well. Yesterday was the worst, browser timing out every few pages I loaded (status kept switching between local and internet. Then TopGear took forever to download via torrent (I think they throttle torrents but usually is not that bad). And Lastly, even the TV channels started acting up with picture getting distorted and sound breaking up. WTF??
I'm already pissed since they keep adding stupid HD channels except SPEED TV, now this crap? Sucks because I can't get FIOS or DirectTV at my house so I'll have to put up with it for now.

:plusone:
this past weekend the clock on the box and the directory listings was off by 40 minutes, and a lot of the HD channels said 'should be available soon...'
Time fixed it self by Sunday night but some of the HD was still hosed

I'm going to pick up one of their newer model modems first.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Comcast did a huge upgrade to their internet speeds awhile back
could be that some have not fully reset their EMTA's Cable Modems etc...
The only real way to reset your cable modem or EMTA
is to unplug the module AND remove the battery.
make sure your router is disconnected from it first then unplug and remove the battery and let it sit OFF for 30 seconds to a minute.
then re-install the battery and plug in the power cable leaving the router disconnected until all the lights on the front of the EMTA or modem are reset
For EMTA's make sure that the line1 and line2 lights have locked in. if they are blinking then the lines are still re-activating.
once all the lights are locked in then reconnect the router.
it should now pull up the new ip address etc...
check your connection all over the house.
if you still are getting slow speeds then the best you can do is contact comcast and let them know this is happening in your area.
and yes the reps are right to put blame on your individual modules that are not comcast approved. why? because it is not their equipment and there is nothing they can do to help you out. so by telling you this (which is fucked up and something i never did and would bitch at the phone people who did) they have a readout of the performance of your equipment so they can tell you if the upstream and downstream are up to par. everything else woud be internal to your network.

Been there, done that. I actually got the modem I have now when they did the network upgrade.
But, like I said, I'm going to get one of the newer generation modems Friday when I'm home.

I just seen that denno posted a soft reset of the modem and most people assume thats enough, but it doesnt fully re-cycle the equipment. for that you need to fully power off and back on...
hopefully that helps your problem.
I too have had internet problems, but i cant say with 100% certainty why.
I am sure it will either work itself out on their end in time or there really is a problem with output and comcast is on the decline.
I have no idea.
I plan to talk to my friend who still works for comcast this week as we need a new drop and i need some compression fittings. The addition is almost complete and i need to get ready to run all the cable.
there will soon be cat5 through out the house, and at minimum 12 cable outlets.
I am in for a nice project.
and as for the amp comment.
the problem is that when you amp an EMTA or Modem you end up with data loss still and you will get more errors and with the EMTA phone quality will suck and drop alot of calls.
your modem EMTA should be on an isolated line from the rest of the cable outlets via a good splitter and should be on a 3.5 loss at the drop (feed)
everything else is a matter of picture quality and an amp and proper splitter usage will help.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Chuck,
The last 2-3 weeks with Comcast has been a night-mare over here. Either way too slow loading or not loading at all.
I was invited by Comcast to be on their "inner-circle community" of 500 participents. I was surprised... I got picked.
I'll have to ask them WTFIU with this problem.
You should register with "OpenDNS" I re-installed their DNS number servers when I first started having the problems with Comcast's DNS servers. Now, no more problems!
-
Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
At least you have something other than Charter......they really SUCK

Well.. what I was trying to say is that most bottle-necks are caused by clogged "DNS". Comcast for the last 2 years has been ratty at best trying to hit their server to get the translation from what a person types in & what its true # is.
I was turned on to "OpenDns" a couple of years ago & I did see a improvement in ping times & such. I then had a few problems with my alternate DNS & only listed them as a secondary backup DNS.
When I started having problems with long hang times trying to access a site, I then added in their primary server #.
It seemed to fix most of my problems with hanging forever to get to a site until recently.
Lately, I have been seeing problems again, plus my TV is starting to have more problems also.
I'm still running the "OpenDns" right now but I can switch it back to Comcast's in a heart beat if needed.
The ping times with Comcast has been getting longer as the years go on, I once was running a 10 ms back in 1995, I now see 100 ms pinging Symantics site on average.
I hope this answers your quandary as to what the heck I was talking about?
-
Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
:mope:
So how do I do this OpenDNS stuff?
http://www.pingtest.net/result/5440066.png
EDIT:  :banghead:
http://www.pingtest.net/result/5440295.png
And this is AFTER I just unplugged my router & popped the battery out.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
OpenDNS won't fix that problem Oreo.

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Google "0pendns.com" register on the site & follow the directions as to setting it up. Make sure you go into settings & turn on "smartcache" after you have completed installing it. If you have a router it is a little diffrent setting up. But just follow their directions & make sure you copy Comcast's DNS #'s just in case you want to switch back.

I hate how comcast makes you go through their stupid troubleshooting when you call them too. I usually just pretend to unplug the modem and routers and stuff. I wouldn't be calling them if I hadn't already done that and it still didn't fix the problem.

Dude, DNS settings aren't going to affect icmp latency...

Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Well, looks like some of my issues were the modem. I went to Comcast and exchanged for a newer model and right away, I'm getting 26mbps down, 3.5mbps up.
And pingtest scores me an A.
-
Re: WTF is up with Comcast lately?
Is there a way to check if I have one of the newer modems already? I changed mine about 6 months ago and like to know if its worth exchanging

Mine were two completely different modem models.
