    E15 torx socket

Here i went to remove a star shaped bolt with E14 torx socket and it was too small. Tried the 16 and it’s too big. Set doesn’t have a 15. Can’t seem to find an E15. Been reading might be no such thing but to try a 10mm in 12 point. Anyone run into this before? The bolts not with me now so I can’t try it. Thanks.

    Possibly a Torx Plus fastener?
I feel like for internal heads Torx will fit Torx Plus, but not external, but I could be completely wrong.

Going to try the 12 point metric and then replace with something more common.

There has to be a socket that works, they put it on with something...

I recently discovered the external Torx fasteners on the Sprinter. Now have wrenches for them - which were not easy to find!

Also would be my guess; Torx Plus or Polydrive.

OP: assuming its a vehicle? What make? Can you get a good pic of the fastener?

It’s a 350 mercruiser. Thermostat housing bolt. Some have these fasteners but some don’t. Only have a lousy pic.

I've never seen a Torx wrench before... would have come in handy on the 911!

I have fixed AND ratcheting, along with sockets. Need them to work on Mercedes. But I have never seen E15.

Sometimes a regular 6 point socket will fit, but you risk rounding it off.

Yeah. Some mentioned this including my brands forum. Some used small vise grips to loosen then replaced with hex or torx T bolts. Found more info from a general google search which took me to a Harley forum apparently due to such a size being on a caliper and some German car forums. Now I’ve got to wait for rain to come and go and try metric 6 points , 12 points, open end wrench etc. no general consensus.

Are you sure it's six-pointed and not double or triple square?

I had funky bolts on an intake manifold for a SBC I once had. I used 12pt sockets to remove. I also have these cheap universal sockets from Kobalt that are supposed to fit anything. I've never needed to use them though.

    I haven't encountered one that a normal 6 point socket couldn't remove.

    Re: E15 torx socket

12 point 3/8 did the trick on and off. Of course once off I learned I the thermostat actually sat in the side of the housing and not in the manifold under the housing. One hose clamp and a pair of 9/16 hex bolt would have been a 10 minute job.

    That's not E-torx.

    Glad you got it sorted.

Thanks. Wish I’d known how the t stat was in the housing and would have been less work and no fiddling with those fasteners.

You've probably already figured this out, but that looks like a standard 12-point. Maybe I'm missing some visual context, but seems like they'd still be easier than 9/16 bolts + hose + clamp.

The first time I saw a 12 point, it was when I separated a transaxle from the block and saw a circle of them holding the flywheel on. My initial reaction was "great, they used some specialty fastener for a critical part and now I gotta chase down some obscure tool..." Many years later and I haven't come across many 12-points. So I guess it technically was a bit of a specialty. Simple tooling though.

Had never come across a 12 point before. Removing the two 12 points resulted in removing two sensors, two hoses, a bracket and the housing, with gasket on either side of the bracket. Once that all came off I was like oh man the t stat is just under that side cover. Lesson learned and won’t forget how easy these t stats are to remove.

After many years of 27mm hex axle bolts, Mercedes switched to an E-24 axle bolt. F-U, Mercedes, for making me buy another tool.

As much as that can suck, I'm glad we're slowly moving towards better fastener designs. Unfortunately now we have to wait for another decade for things to settle down and standardize.
