Or a 500XC W / EXC / Whatever label they're putting on the street legal ver. Get it in Gas Gas red to save some money?
And by 'big' DR, you mean the 800 right?

nhbubba made another post on social media someplace that I read where he enjoyed his previous DRZ400 variant and didn't necessarily enjoy the fire breathing nature of the WR450F that he bought subsequently. Perhaps there is something to be said for a more relaxed, sedate style motorcycle that is capable in its own right at a different level.
It can be more enjoyable operating an underpowered, less capable vehicle at 9/10ths - 10/10ths where driving a high powered, highly capable vehicle driven at 4/10ths - 5/10ths makes for a less enjoyable experience
I love that the 500 can hang with hot 450s on top, and still be just as docile and polite as a kitten when desired. Geared for Loudon my 500 was still just as happy as could be at Boxshop too, it's a sweet motor with a huge torque spread mated to a big wide transmission it can fully utilize, and far more relaxed than the 450s maint wise, but no real weight penalty (450 in road legal trim weighs the same).
He needs an XT250, steel tank and all.

Maybe I have rose colored glasses and all. But yeah, I loved riding the complete piss out of my DRZ, especially WFO through the interchanges on the interslab. And that time I had the dualsport front fender in the wind like a wet noodle going down-town at NYST. Yeeeehaw. Also took it for a rip on my backyard loop the day before I sold it and was super impressed at how well we got on. And that one time at stimilon.
That bike was gas-n-go bliss.
I'm probably forgetting about all the times I found the throttle stop and thought "that's it" or the times Joel had to drag me AND that heavy ass bike out of the woods or getting knocked around on state highways at 48 MPH behind a minivan or how the handlebars bent if you looked at them wrong or ..
Kinda feeling queasy thinking about how my cams looked when I just opened up the top of my orange unicorn 890 with barely 7500 on it. Not feeling the orange love right now. Need some balance in this equation. My Road King can't be the most reliable thing I own .. or can it?
And the 500 was definitely an animal. Lots of unsettling noises and ready to tear your head off and piss in the blood puddles.
Still, were I ready for a KTM I think maybe a 350 EXC-F or maybe a 250 XC-W converted? I dunno.
Naw, I think I want a slow, mild-mannered japanese something or other. Barely domesticated MX 450s with crazy lean fuel mappings need not apply. I'd be open to demoing a 450L. Still quite convinced it isn't the droid I'm looking for. Lotta munnie too.
Right now a $3000 marketplace special DRZ with a torn seat, dead battery, rusted chain and mismatched plastics is the mood I'm feeling. I'll nurse it back, you watch me.
I probably have my head up my ass. Wouldn't be the first time.
Hope you all are doing well. Thanks for BS'ing bikes with me.
Bubs. We’ve missed you around here. Muse all the musings you need to, just stay out of the political threads. It isn’t even sad comedy anymore.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief

I guess I should start hunting a DRZ400E.
I have a buddy that will sell a non-e down here in Boston for short money. I can put you two in contact if you’re interested.
