    Budget (free) bike build

I am the proud owner of a hunk of crap '86 Yamaha XT600. It was free, so I figured I could tinker with it in my spare time. It has no become an obsession to get this running. I have never had it running, and it was not running before it was in my possession, so there is a lot of work to be done. I decided to start with the carb. I ripped it out, tore it apart, cleaned all the bits and looked through the fiche on bike bandit to see if anything was missing, sure enough, lots of things. As I searched deeper, I realized that the carb is from an '82 XT550. Same concept, being a YDIS system, with a small primary, and a vacuum secondary with a shared float bowl.

On the '86 carbs, there is a fitting at the bottom of the float bowl that runs to the jet of the secondary to feed that fuel. On the '82 however, there is not, and I can not figure out for the life of me how it gets fed. My question is, can I add a fitting to the bottom of the primary bowl, and use it to feed the secondary?

Thanks Mondo! I'm thinking that its free, and whats the worse that can happen, I have to get a new carb anyways. Probably just going to go for it.

That chain looks *tight*. The older dual carb setups were a PITA, whether it was on an XR/XL or the TT/XT.
That definately has the potential to be restored into a very nice play bike!

The chain is beyond tight. Everything about this bike needs a fix. Notice the wooden block under the rear fender...supporting the frame since the spring/shock combo in there cant do it... Thing is a mess.

Yes, the ramped preload collar on the shock tells me that shock most likely does not belong on that bike.
    Thank God for E-Bay.
I had a TT350 with an Ohlins shock. It was a great little bike! My brother had an XT600 that served him well in Germany.
Take your time, source the correct parts, and you will have a very nice bike when you are done.
