That YZ250 was good for one thing: gettin on the pipe in the middle of the corn/tobacco fields in Enfield CT where I was livin at the time. Man did it rip once opened up.
Friend of a friend has a WR426, all done up with the Tusk light kit, he's had it for years. Starts but won't stay running, carb is all gummed up from sitting for 2 years (he turned into a breeder, WHAT A DUMMY, AMIRIGHT?). I'm going to check it out, do a full leakdown test (he's more than happy with me giving it the full "grab her by the pussy" inspection) and everything. Already has the carb rebuild kit for it.
It's relatively cheap, already street, registered, titled etc.
I can get into it for about a QUARTER of my budget. Yeah, it's that cheap. 80 hours on it. I'll kick like hell for that kinda $$. Plus it has the YZ450 decomp cam which should make it easier.
Stay tuned......

The yz450 auto decompression cam gets rid "the routine"!
I found carbs kind of expensive for how old the bike is...but rebuild kits are cheap
Lol breeder...is it that dramatic? I tend to get great deals off them

My discovery of the day; used YZ/WR wheels are more expensive than I think they should be. I now feel like I stole the KTM & DRZ sets I've bought over the years.
Moral of this discovery is that you need to buy a brand new KTM 500 EXC. Nothing else will do.

For kicking, yes. You still have the flooded crash issue, or breathing on the throttle while trying to restart, etc, etc. That being said, I never had an issue starting my WR 426, or my YZ 426 in most cases. The issue is, you never crash in ideal locations, and restarting becomes a chore.

Applies to teeny weeny 2-smokes too. Doubly so on ice.
ride with a friend and bring a tie down for roll starts
^^EVERY stop on this 426...towed by a crf230
naah, srsly though...for a "once every couple weeks" kind of bike to explore some local trails, then maybe ice 1-2 times/winter, the 426 w' the 450 cam is fine. Tuned right it's no harder to start than any other 4 stroke...even a hot XR400R was harder to start than the YZ426 I had (with a clogged pilot). Might as well try it at that price point...I second what Paul said about dirt bikes having a ton of variety and you won't know her for sure until you live with it. If you find you're riding a shitload more than you're expecting, sell the 426 and trade up to an e-start ktm.
The only issue that trumps price, is if you have to spend tons of time getting her to run correctly...with the breeder/time balance, you want as much of a turn key bike as possible and you can certainly get there with your posted budget.

If you're set on a plated 4t.. maybe also consider an older air-cooled option. XR400. CRF230. Etc. One of the guys we rode Hatfield with was on an older plated 230 and did just fine. I can't believe he rode that tank that hard for that long. But the machine sure did not let him down. Bet those are cheap and easy to live with.
The 230 is a tank, but not a true full size...the power is mellow (think good midrange torque), the suspension is pogo-ish, and geometry won't do whoops well. Good for noob+ gf's and people that like small bikes (like me, ha). Tony was hunting before...a 230F made street legal is better than an 230L

Well, what the hell. Let's go!
I've been on the road the past 2 weeks (back late this Friday) so I owe my weekend to the wife and kids. Perhaps the weekend of the 12th?
"...i would seriously bite somebody right in the balls..." -bump909
Breeders.. I tell you.
The 12th is claimed.
To my own disapointment, I've barely been out riding this year so you'll have to take it easy on me!

Maybe I was too vague there. I'm busy the 12th. Lemme know how it goes.
Maybe the hairy one will have an operational bike by then and will join you.
Yeah... That would be me interpreting what you said completely opposite to what you meant.
Some time we'll make it out there. There is also a new riding area in Hill NH that seems like it's worth checking out too.

I doubt I'll have anything ready to rip by then, but ya never know.
Heard more details from another friend about this bike. Guy is a hack when fixing stuff, also has lied about things before when selling to friends. I'm going to be VERY cautious on this one. Anyone got a leak down tester?
If it wasn't so cheap, I wouldn't even go look at it. But he's askin $800, and I'm sure I could beat him up on that.
