looking to pick up a used 250 2 stroke, preferably Yamaha but I'm open. my question is, how old is too old. meaning when were the most signifigant changes in these bikes. i don't want to buy a 2000 just to find out the bikes were dramatically improved for 01. thoughts?

What do you want to use the bike for and what is your skill level? Woods riding, you can grab a bike a few years older then one you would use for MX or hare scrambles.

You're on the right track -- YZ250, '02-up. However, you can get an '06-up for not a lot more.

decent tires, recent chain, sprockets, 1/2 season on GMD rebuilt forks, traction dynamics valving, tuned for the trails. Have reciepts somewhere for like $1000 in stuff me and Peter did to it beginning of the spring.

Go watch The first Crusty Demons of Dirt vid... They filmed that shit in 1994... That should show you what the bikes would do back then. Pretty much anything you get should do all that you ask of it... My problem is I keep asking mine to toss me. It's usually more than happy to oblige.

Crusty Demons Of Dirt is the best shit ever. I have to go order it on DVD now, since you reminded me.

That one scene where you just hear this streetbike screaming, getting louder... camera is just pointed down some road... then the bike comes flying across the street (and field of vision) without ever touching the ground.

Or that Seth(?) dude that launches some ridiculous distance in the dunes and totally wipes... his friends come up to him while he's laying there in the sand "dude you have some serious issues you need to work out with yourself"...

    The fucking best.

I have a 90 KDX200 that I ride in the trails and it is more than good enough for me. I'm not racing out there.

I also ride MX tracks, and I bought a KTM sx125 for that. It's WAY more bike than I'll ever need. Again, not competing.

There's not much common ground between trail and track set-ups, which is why I ended up with two bikes. Think about where you will ride most and go in that direction.

I frankly don't think age matters much, other than aftermarket parts availability. Newer = more parts available. If it's a 2 stroke, the number of hours on the motor is important. If you can find someone who kept good records, you'll know what you're in for. If not, just count on 1,000 bucks to get it where it should be.
