MA plate mounting

How are you guys mounting your plates?

on the DCR website, and when I went to register the bike, it was stated that I have to mount the plate on the back of the bike

this obv. isn't a street bike so there isn't any OEM solution

I was just going to use L-brackets from Lowe's, but with all the jarring and dropping on the trail, I don't want to lose the plate

btw, I am now MA legal, let's go!!!!

I just bolted mine to the rear fender

Rear fender - so long as they can see it from the back they are usually fine. If you are fully MA legal though I think you need turn signals too... why not just mount it up to where those are?

if you are talking yellow atv plate then just bolt it on the rear fender , granted you need to drill holes . if it over hangs a bit , just bend it around to form to the fender
on a dirt bike it won't be visible as you are riding by the ELE cop but he will be wanting you to stop anyway to check things out .
my dual sport ( street plate ) is mounted on an actual bracket but usually its covered in dirt o mud and i have to wipe it off for the ele to see anyway .

ive bolted to the front number plate on two different bikes, ran into plenty of rangers, never hassled.

Ive seen them attached to chest protectors as well. Im sure most rangers dont care as long as you are legal and have your paper work but why give that one dickhead another reason to ticket you.

use nylon lock nuts and a little blue locktite... that shit wont move!

I used the "L" bracket method and ended up losing
my cherished "KLBLL" NH Plate

Just do it the right way

Last time, I didn't want to drill through the plastics, and tried using the factory fender mounts.

Fail:



Everytime I hit a bump, the wheel would go into the fender, grab the plate, and bend it back. So I bent the plate up farther and farther until it didn't hit, but then you couldn't see the plate



So I dug up some sheet metal from the garage, cut it down, and marked it to fit:



I then drilled holes and mounted the plate to it:





Two small holes in the rear fender:



And voila: the plate is now visible from the rear and it's up and out of the way of the rear tire



I took it for a quick run in 4th gear over bumps and the plate wasn't hit, so I think it's good.

Worst case scenario, I bend the sheet metal so the plate angles outwards a little more

btw, wet pavement + knobbies + rev happy 2-smoker = FAIL

i still say front plate is best, totally out of harms way, i think you're gonna lose that whole mount in the rough stuff, plastic will rip

I wouldnt worry about drilling into the fender. Youll see how I did mine on Sat. If youre worried about having holes you can buy a replacement for like 30. I think a set is like 150.

clinton is right, up front and out of harms way. you will crash and chances are good you will rip that off your fender when you do.

I don't want to bring tools and figure out how to re-mount the plate if the plastic rips while we're out there

I paid for the registration, the plate is visible, and I'll have all my paperwork on me; that should be good enough for the cops.

measured once, 4 screws, it's done!

bingo! not going anywhere now

while i agree with unions comment above, i really dont think you'll have an issue. the back fender just takes too much abuse unless you curve it around a wide spot and bolt with 4 bolts.
