basically you're looking for pretty much a chatterbox but the actual unit doesn't attach to the side of the helmet? i'm not sure i've ever seen anything like that.
yeah i cant find nething thats why I was hopeing someone knew of something
Almost all the better motorola sport radios can take an ear piece and microphone that could be put in your hat.
Not sure about keying the mike would have to be jury rigged.
some of them have a theoretical range of 14 miles so should real world reliably do a mile

I tried using a FRS radio the ones we got came with an ear bud / mic sombo and a voice activated feature. THe problem was that at anything over about 40 mph the wind noise set off the vox and the thing stayed on the whole time so neither of us could talk.
I tried the same set up in the push to talk mode and positioned the radio in my jacket pocket in such a way I could push the button. problem was I could only do that when I wasn't manuvering the bike . I suppose if you could mount it on your handle bar close enough to the grip you could push to talk.
Other wise you will have to go with a chatter box set up and pony up the $$$$$$ for the quality. But if you want to get out of it cheaply go with a motorola frs radio that has voice activation with adjustable noise level.

You dont have to use the chatterbox on the side of the helmet, they actually make a belt clip for it.. the side of the helmet is just convinent

I have always been told, Autocom is the way to go.
but in the past year or so, I have been hearing of a company called Motocom, their pricing is lower than Autocom, I haven't seen any comparisons yet though in performance

You can use a chatterbox with a mic and headphone extension cable, then just throw the chatterbox in your backpack.. They a VOX controlled which is cool.

If I am not mistaken you can buya cord for those motorola type ones that put the P-T-T button where you want, like on your bar.
How about for a cheap set of walkie talkies?Originally posted by theothersean

I saw these online (6 mile max radius...so maybe 1 mile realisitically) for $15 + s&h that offer the option of a speaker/microphone setup. If it were rigged on teh handlebars as you say, would it be cheap and effective? Or a PITA and a waste of time?

I put my chatterbox in my tankbag or in my trunk.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
