"When there's a gap you either commit yourself as a professional racing driver that is designed to win races or you come second or you come third or come fifth, and I'm not designed to come third, fourth, or fifth. I race to win, and if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you're no longer a racing driver."

Yeah, this is why I never stay behind trucks carrying stuff for longer than I absolutely have to. Seen way too much shit fly out of beds or trailers because people don't properly secure their crap.

Traffic with cages and trucks sucks.
we have rail trails for walkers and bicycles, roads for non commercial vehicles only, commuter lanes, and all kinds of regulations to improve gas mileage.
Time for some motorcycle only roads!
In the winter leave em unplowed and allow sleds or bikes with spikes only...
PS riding on the street with a gopro camera running is like taping a "kick me" sign to your back...just BEGGING fate for something dramatic to happen!
yep, that was here in CA on the 710 freeway...crazy stuff
That happened to me on the expressway in Dorchester just this year, except it was a washing machine that fell off a flatbed.
I was on the VFR two lanes to the left of it. As it landed on its side and spun towards me like a curling stone, it really did seem to happen in slow motion.
I had two immediate reactions, the first was that avoiding this will be easy, just aim where it is and when I get there it won't still be there. The more serious risk was that someone ahead, beside or behind me in a cage would do something stupid and hurt me.
luckily it had slid to my left and I swerved around it and was on my way.
for some reason (this) I have always been very concerned about stuff flying from vehicles around me.
still, scary shite!

Yeah. And all I can think of is, "what if I was riding my motorcycle?"

That happened to me once, but it must have been a box of trash bags (the big industrial ones) that let go. They were everywhere!
I had a whole pickup bed slid off the truck's frame in front of me, luckily, we were at a stop sign and I was stopped behind him, when traffic cleared and he pulled out from the stop sign, the bed slid off and fell on the ground, I spose it coulda just as easily stayed on till we got up to 50mph and he hit a bump
I am very religious about the 3 second rule when moving

Yup, I've seen a mattress, a 20' aluminum extension ladder, bags of concrete mix, etc... Most recently was a driveshaft from an F350 pulling a skid steer on Rte 2 just after I95. Only two lanes there and a jersey barrier to my left. I just plain got lucky. I got right next to the barrier but I really had nowhere to go if it decided it was going to come straight at me.
It served as a good reminder that you can identify and mitigate many risks but the risks can not be eliminated completely. It's still a dangerous business no matter how careful you are.
You can do everything right and still end up with a driveshaft up your ass.
Damnnn....something similar (but way less dangerous) happened to me on rt 2 Saturday. Been debating putting up the video. Some dumbass strapped a bunch of sheetrock to the top of his minivan, but only ran the straps laterally. Dumped all over the lane. I noticed the cars in front of me swerving into the breakdown lane. I probably would've noticed it had they not been in front of me, but my reaction might not have been as smooth. Good reminder to stay frosty.
Last week (driving, thankfully) I was on Rt.2E just after 128 in the left lane. I was watching in my mirrors at the traffic coming up the on-ramp for cops and when I turned back to look ahead, there was a roadkill deer in between the left and center lanes. I had enough time to startle jump and very slightly turn away. I probably missed it by 2-3 feet. If I had hit it, it would have destroyed my front bumper or worse, if I was riding.

I had a tractor trailer section of tire flip directly over my head. I think I dented my tank trying to get so low to avoid it.

In the description of the 2x4 video, she writes that she was recording them because they were essentially a rolling roadblock.
