Other than that I don't recall anything to do with the steering neck of the bike having issues. Just curious what it is you are describing.
The frames would crack right at the steering head. Only on the S models. I saw many run through the shop when I was working as mech. A few even broke right in two. This was when they first came out, I don't know if they corrected the problem later on. I was told the head shake was partially to blame for it, literally shaking itself to death. The other fault laid in it's tendency to wheelie and owners slamming the front end down and not enough bracing to handle all the forces.
If memory serves, there is a small weep hole in the frame just behind the steering head. That is where the cracks begin. Welding the hole was a fix we did but I don't know if it actually helped later in life, more a piece of mind thing.

Bastard....
My k1 750 is mudded in. I won't be able to get it out until the fields dry, maybe a month.

The '97's were known to have the steering head crack...it did only affect the 97 S model. It was corrected for 98. Still a great/fun bike.

The motor on those were nice and the handling was not bad once you put a steering damper on it.
Re: The Best bikes on Craigslist
I still have my '82 sitting in the basement. Black/red.

Because it is. I sold a Scorpa SY250 about a year ago for almost double. I laughed when the dude came to look at it.. said it’s so ugly, I had to buy it. They are great for building balance skills, I actually started to have fun on mine.. then came the back injury (work related) and the bike became painful to look at, let alone try and ride it

How’s ur back now? What is your go to ride?
I just had surgery on pinched nerves in both wrists, and my left elbow.
The ninja is difficult… the street bob with apes, puts my wrist and elbow apparently in a perfect position to feel unnervingly weird.
The triumph is the most sublime.

I think the real early Ninja 250s look cooler than the 88+.

I’m still limited in what I can do.. I have 3 herniated lumbar discs, PT was a huge help in recovery, but I’m still limited.
I love my Tuono Factory for the streets, and I still love sportbikes. If I ride an R1 for 1/2 hour, I feel like I got hit by a truck. Off-road, I can still ride the sport quads (YFZ450R, Raptor700R) and can ride the YZ450FX for about 45 minutes to an hour before my back says fuck you, stop.
