My 01 ZX9R will turn over 110,000 miles on the way home from work today. Can't believe how perfectly the engine still runs. I replaced the head at around 90,000 miles because I ran out of valve adjustment and a used, low-mile, head was cheaper (125 bucks) than new valves, but the bottom end is still all original and perfect. I installed my 27th front tire, 5th set of plugs, 12th set of front pads and 5th (maybe 6th??) battery; and did my 22nd oil change (Mobil 1 15W50) yesterday.
That is awesome. I love hearing about bikes hitting 6 digits. Gives me hope. My 89 FJ is at exactly half that w/ 55k.. that ZX has seen some use. I also like the Mobil 1 and use 4T in my old GS500 and now the GSXR. Using Rotella 5W-40 synth diesel in my FJ because it's dirt cheap rides smooth and fixed any neutral problems.
Congrats!
I use the 15-40 dino Rotella in my FJ because sometimes those air cooled mills get HOT and that 5W might not be thick enough. Just my hunch.
Stoink, nice job with the ZX, glad you fixed 'er up. Up for another VT ride?

Jesus! That is amazing. If I added up the total miles driven / ridden with my last three cars and three bikes I'd be sub 110,000.
Did I see you a little after 4pm in Westford at the intersection of North St and Rt 40?
I would love another ride, that was fun.
Funny you mention Rottella, I was going to switch to 5W-40 T6 on this oil change because the bike was feeling like it was turning over sluggishly when cold with the 15W-50, but they were out of50 the 1 gallon jugs of T6 and I had enough 15W-50 Mobil1 on hand. It turns out the sluggishness was just the battery regardless; with a new battery and plugs it just bursts to life like the old days. I love the silky-smooth shifts of new Mobil 1 15W-50...
I use the 15W-40 dino Rotella in the 7.4 MPI in my boat. I change it every year and it only gets 50-75 hours use between changes, thus no reason for synthetic. My Duramax truck gets T6, and my 3 cars and air cooled 4-stroke engines all get Mobil 1 5W-30. I keep spare filters on hand for everything too, so my garage shelves look like the oil department of Walmart only filthier.
Other than my all-original (except tires, but I still have the originals) 1968 BSA 441SS with only 5000 miles, my 9R is my lowest mileage vehicle. My truck has 202k, my car has 191k, my van has 187k and my SUV has 133k. I keep stuff forever.
The BSA requires way too much effort (repairs and maintenance) to ride. It's just awful and I fully understand why they went out of business when Japanese bikes hit the world market... Looks neat though.
That's awesome. I envy your ability to actually ride a sport bike that much.

Nice. My 2011 Triumph Tiger 800 XC will be hitting 100,000 miles in a couple months or so (it's currently just shy of 96,000). It's been an utterly fantastic motorcycle. It finally needed its first valve adjustment at 86,000 miles, but otherwise the motor has needed nothing but oil changes. The only major component I've replaced is the rear shock -- I just replaced the very tired original one with a Wilbers shock. Otherwise, nothing but consumables.
It will be needing a new clutch soon though -- still works perfectly, but I'm nearly out of clutch cable adjustment.

First to have a sport bike hit 110k miles is amazing. Most note worthy is that you actually have all the records which is probably why the bike lasted so long. It takes that kind of person to own a bike for that long and put that many miles on it. Any current pictures of this high mileage beauty?
(Mark) I had a Tiger 800 XC. The clutch didn't make it past 4500 miles. I am not the guy represented in this thread.

Wow...I borrowed a valve spring compressor from you years ago and remember seeing this bike!
I didn't even think bikes made it this long...My FZR600 transmission roasted by 70k-ish miles

I was trying to stop before I T-boned a car that ran a stop sign and was threshold braking. As the room to stop proved inadequate, I squeezed the brake harder, hoped for the best, and stoppied just as I got to the front right fender of the car. The tank and airbox took the brunt of the impact. I've been more skittish than I'd like since then... I still have the tank, dunno why.
Congrats on getting to 110,000. My 1999 ZX9R only has 79,000 miles. I have a bit more riding to catch up to you. I need to work less and ride more...
It always amazes me how long some of these sport bike engines can run for. I have seen some absolutely outrageous mileages in some of the GSXR and Hayabusa communities I frequent (200k+). I guess thats what happens when you street ride an overbuilt race bike...
Most bikes will do more than 100K if they are (a) ridden enough, and (b) maintained decently.
Sitting in a garage, it gets no mileage, and deteriorates from disuse.
I've got 260K on my Ducati Monster so far, just by riding it every day, and doing the maintenance pretty much on schedule.
Fixing stuff when it wears out, but that hasn't been a huge problem.
