    Cool weather jacket????

This question is for all the gear gurus and anybody else with valuable input. I'm looking for a wind/rain proof jacket that i can wear in the cooler weather. The way the weather has been lately it's a little too cold at night for me to ride with just a sweatshirt but with my leather jacket it's too hot. So basically i'm looking for a light-medium weight jacket that's wind and waterproof. Any suggestions or info would be great.

    Whats your budget?

I know of a few that are in the $100-$200 range, and a many that cost close to a grand.

The SS Hell n' Back Jacket is on sale at Revzilla for $209

I've had the Olympia Motosports AST (now AST 2) for several years.
The Nomad is a waist-length coat.

As for budget, the less expensive the better but i'm not looking for some walmart jacket that'll fall apart after a month either. I would also prefer something that is shorter so that it doesn't get all bunched up when i sit on the bike.

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

I have a 3/4 length Tourmaster textile jacket that has been around for nearly a decade now. That's my go-to jacket in the colder temps. It is large and poorly vented and so miserable in the hot.

I would stay away from Joe Rocket. I have one of their Atomic jackets that is advertised as water proof; it isn't. It fit well and was comfortable. Flexible too as I could use it just about all three seasons. But it fell apart after barely 2 years of use.

If I ever get another 3/4 it is going to be a top-grade jacket, probably gore-tex. I'd like something I could ride through light rain without stopping to pull on an over-suit.

How is the water proofing on that thing?

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

Tourmaster had a jacket called "The Raven." It was basically a waist-length version of the Transition 2. Waterproof, removable insulated liner, mesh lining, decent ventilation. It discontinued now, but Motorcycle-Gear.com has a few available, in all sizes but small, in black only, for $134.99. It also had an MSRP of $180, so it's not top of the line, but not exactly Wal-Mart quality either.

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

I have this one and I am pretty happy with it. It has a zip-out liner for really cold days. With the liner it is comfortable for me down to 40 *F. Without the liner it is great for non-hot days.
It runs very small. I usually take a Medium or Large. I had to swap for an XL and it is still a bit snug with the liner installed. It fits perfect without the liner.
I have verified the waterproof claim many times. Works well.

I have a Dianese with Dritec. I don't know the model, but it has a liner. I ride it without the liner down to 55 or so, but I have a nice windshield which helps. It is good with water as long as it isn't raining heavily for a long time. Brief shower or misty, it's great. I don't know of much that breathes well, and still maintains really good water resistance for long periods. Carry a rain coat.

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

I use a Rev'It CR textile jacket. Combined with a fleece and some UA coldgear, I have been able to tolerate riding into the 40s, but after 30 minutes, it starts to suck. It's kept me dry enough through an hour of pouring rain. The jacket has no ventilation, so if it's more than 70 out, it's a little too much, even without the liner.

Check out the Macna line at Twisted Throttle. I posted a similar thread here a few months ago. At the TT Open House this year, I took advantage of the 15% off and picked up a Macna Oasis jacket. I have since ridden through driving rain and hail and it's kept me dry. Unzip the liners, hang it up to dry over night, and put it back together for the next rain or sunny day. The waterproof liner zips in and out in about a minute. I'm really pleased with it. I can't wait to order a pair of their pants.

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

Love my First Gear TPG stuff, used for years and 10s of thousands of miles it's held up great and still keeps me dry. Look for waterproof shell, not liner to stay dry in the rain. I use it with or without the liner, and switch to the heated liner below 40 degrees or so.
On a side note Gerbings started making their heated gear in the USA again, that alone would earn them my busines next time around.

I just got a GP Pro Alpinestars jacket from Rider's discount off the WERA forum. ZERO perforation so it is gonna be my spring/fall jacket. Very nice quality but the MSRP is something like $525.00

If you can swing it, I would suggest it.

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

Well i definitely appreciate all the responses. The more i think about it the more i realize that i don't want to spend more than $1-200 on this jacket. Seeing as though it will end up sitting in the closet for ~8-9 months out of the year i can't justify spending 3, 4, 500 dollars on it. Keep the suggestions coming and i'll keep researching. Thanks.

I would wait for a closeout buy on a quality jacket. Otherwise you will end up buying a cheap jacket now and then another, quality jacket down the line.

At least that's how it works for me.

If you know your size, look on eBay for once-worn and closeouts.

Bought an Olympia AirGlide that didn't fit the original buyer for $130 delivered.

Yea I got my for $150. I love it. I've ridden with in 32 degress (W/out the heated tourmaster liner) to 90. I love the storm collar. IT keeps the cold air from running down your chest. It zips on and off. picture is w/out it.

    Here it is.

I caught a Shift mesh jacket w/waterproof/windproof liner for $99 at International Motorsports on their sales rack. Fits great, light as a feather, lots of airflow and seems to be well made for the price. I wear it all the time now instead of my much heavier Cortech Air.

Funny, I went the other way. I started with a Rev'It Air mesh jacket. Then I got the CR textile jacket for spring and fall. Recently, I got a Replica and a Tarmac leather jackets and when I swapped back to the Air jacket for one of those 90 degree days we had, it felt insubstantial. I see now why some people would rather sweat in full leather than wear mesh.

    Re: Cool weather jacket????

So i went out the past few days to various local places that sell jackets/apparel and apparently i have abnormally long arms. There were quite a few companies that fit well around my torso but the sleeves were about an inch too short. I know most of the jackets were a size medium or small depending on the brand but the only sleeves that worked were from large sized jackets. Are there any companies that y'all know of that the sleeves run long?

First Gear makes tall sizes, might fit you. GBM stocked them, I'd call to see what sizes they have.
