Technically that's true, and I get the point you're trying to make... but for some of us it's surpassed recreation. For me it's medicinal. I get really irritable when I can't ride for extended periods (i.e., winter). It's my coping mechanism; my therapy. Riding a motorcycle is my favorite thing in the world. So if someone tried to prevent me from doing it, they'd get a swift "fuck you" as I walked out the door, got on my motorcycle, and rode away.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I'll keep an eye out for deals, but I'm 19 and still living with my mom, and since the accident she said I can't have a motorcycle in the Garage. Maybe my dad would let me keep one in his garage at his place. I'm moving out in a year anyway so I will get one sooner or later. And the track days and Advanced rider courses are good ideas. Thanks guys! (and gals)
Ride a dirt bike for a while, you can learn and crash a lot without many of the street risks. Plus you'll get most of your money back for a bike when you wanna sell for a street bike.
Hrm.... Being 19 and living w/ a parent changes things, IMO...
I'm almost 34... and I still remember the moment like it was yesterday, when I was 18, walked into the computer room at my paren'ts place and asked my dad about the possibility of getting a motorcycle. He didn't even look at me. Just paused what he was doing, said "NOT while you're living in MYYYYY fucking house" and went back to whatever it was he was doing.
That was the end of that.
You're still young... got plenty of time to get another bike.

LOL.
The second time I asked my dad I got a very different response.... "Meh... ask your mother."![]()
He didn't even remember the first time I asked. Chuckled when I told him my recount of it.
That was also just after I graduated college & was about to move into Boston.

There's truth and charm and beauty
And strangeness everywhere
The closer we examine
The more there's nothing there
Her response was "ask your father".

I crashed after 2.5 months even with the MSF course. Low sided, tumbled head over heels in a corner out in western MA, bike ended up being totaled underneath a guard rail, ER visit, scratch and bruises.
My father, strict old school Asian during the 'Nam wartime, looked at me and said 'You like throwing away money?' I ended up throwing away more money at another bike and was riding in two weeks time.
Want to ride? Grab another bike. People are always going to tell you otherwise - why bother with them.
Your money, your life, your time - ENJOY IT. Ride Safe.
OP, us, you should pay attention to actual versus perceived risk. So eat well, exercise a lot, and try not to die of coronary heart disease like most Americans will.
Left-turning vehicles account for more than half of all "multi-vehicle" accidents according to the Hurt Report. The drivers do not see you due to a physiological effect called "looming."
You can mitigate the risk of that kind of accident by being especially vigilant with cars approaching from cross streets, wearing hi viz clothing, light colored helmet, and using the "Anti-SMIDSY Maneuver."
Ever notice that lots of new riders have those cool flat black helmets and black leather jackets? Ever notice that a lot of the old, not-dead riders wear white or day glow helmets and high-viz jackets?

Thanks again everyone! She refuses to let me tell anyone else this, especially my mom, but not only will she let me get another one, she said she wants to get one too! Haha what you all said had an effect on her after all. I'll keep my eyes open for any more good deals![]()
