what are the best earphones to wear with/under helmet?

For those of you that wear ear phones on longer rides, which ones do you recommend? I don't want the helmet-specific mini speaker/head phone things, but actual ear phones that can be used without the helmet but also are comfortable with the helmet on.

I was just thinking this on my ride into work. I used these ear buds (replica ipod ones) and they weren't comfortable at all and hurt like hell putting on my helmet and removing my helmet with them on. I think there are some really tiny ear buds that I may try.

i have sony ones and Bose ones. neither work for me. but i know daytrader and a few others have these cheap $20 sony ones that go in your ear and work perfectly

I have an 'in the ear' style monitor. they are SKULL CANDY INKED. They work pretty good.

I have a set of noise cancelling ones, they're a pain in the ass to get in, but for long rides they're not that uncomfortable, and you dont need the music on 10 just to hear it about 30 mph. I forget what they are, but I posted them in one of the other headphone threads, so search for that.

either the Shure, or the Etymotic. Nice thing about my Shures is that you can change the ends and find what works and fits best.

Yea I never tried the Shures with a helmet, but I know they're nice... the ink'd ones look like they would work well too. I'm gonna shop around a little and see what I end up with.

+1 on skull candy. they block out a lot of drone, sound good and are cheap

I agree, I have been using Shure over the past two seasons and they are awesome! Fit nice, good sound etc. and they dont shift in your ear when taking your helmet on and off or at 100mph.

Akuma helmets just did a press release on their built in bluetooth headphones, dont remember where i saw the link but looks promising

get a pair from shure, they go right in your ear like an earplug

I have the Shure noise reducing in-ear headphones and they'rea great. The different attachments really help a lot(come with a foam attachment like earplugs) but they're a bit on the pricey side at $200

i ended up getting the skullcandy ink'd ones... i looked at the shures but i'm not gonna drop $80-100 (at least) on something i'm "trying out" you know? I'd prefer to spend $20 (which i did on amazon for the ink'd with free 2 day ship) on a set of ear phones and then the other $80 on a set of noise isolating headphones that I will use much more often and enjoy more than super high quality ear buds.

My friend's uncle worked in the sound/audio industry so he had a bunch of different shure ear phones, including the $300+ model. Personally I don't think it's worth it...

i did not like helmet speakers, i had to turn turn them up so much it was uncomfertable if i could get them loud enough to hear any of the music over the wind and such

Technically they aren't legal. I was given a warning for wearing earbuds with a cd player. Interestingly enough the state cop told me that the helmet speakers are not illegal, only earphones that go into the ear are illegal.

And I bet most people that get them are using htem for music- that's why you see MP3/CD player pockets in bike jackets and a lot of tank bags. As long as you're not completely oblivious of everything because you're blasting music in your head, I don't see it as being any more dangerous than "communicating" with a phone or GPS or whatever you'd hook the helmet speakers up to- since communicating requires you to interact with whatever you're communicating with and that's arguably more dangerous than just listening to background music.

Let's just say that an officer would probably give you less grief if you had something like a chatterbox or GPS tied into your headset. Then you could patch the MP3 player into the other device.

For those who have the phones fall out,
do like Keith Moon (the Who) and gaffer tape them on
your head!

Seriously any of the ones that have a foam ear piece
attachment... look like regular ear plugs
work great for me. Plus that cut out some of the ambient
noise of the wind and the bike.
Some even can have custom ear pieces made. But these are pricey.

i just picked up some skullcandy earbuds. They sell them at Best Buy for $31.99. I think they come in two colors and work better than anything else i've tried.
