My Bell RS1 is expiring (for LRRS) this October. It fits pretty well everywhere, but my long face has my chin pretty close to the bottom front of the helmet. I'm trying a Bell Star in the same size to replace it, but the helmet chinbar rests about one finger-width away from my chin, and very easily contacts my chin when simulating a face-first impact. Any thoughts/experience on what helmet might protect this pretty face better, while still fitting the rest of my noggin?

Meh, your face isn't that pretty
I was wearing this helmet in a crash.
The chin guard is roughly a 1/4" from my mouth. (I know that because I've worn the same helmet on the street and my "flat" mic that is part of my com system is touching my lips).
My nose touches the nose shield on a regular basis. It's not touching all the time, but is within an 1/8".
I don't really have much of a feel for how close my chin was to the bottom of the chin guard.
I didn't land totally on my face, but significantly on my face.
There wasn't any damage (to my face) as a result.
The insides of the helmet are "relatively" soft (as compared to most of the other things involved in a crash).
I think you are over worrying.
ETA:
Ohh, yeah... Mid crash the face shield got "removed" somehow. My chin bar ended up shoveling grass and dirt into my face through the grass outside of 11. Still no damage (to my face).

Have you tried 6d helmets?

I would suggest coming into the shop and getting fitted by a trained pro. Adam and/or Jim @ Seacoast Sport Cycle will be glad to fit you and takes about 30-45 mins total.
You might find that fit best in an Arai or Shoei or maybe it is a Bell that’s best for your noggin, but they can fine tune it with cheek and crown pads (depending on brands). We did Scott James, Rick Doucette and others this season - all who were wearing the wrong size, shape, padding or model previously...
Something to consider !

Old school Days Paul from MotoMarket offered this and it’s actually is a Must if you havent. What piece of gear is worn the most, closest to your body and holds your computer? I say its worth the time always........and they give you some insight on sheild removal, cleaning ect.

IIRC the Bell RS1 was more towards the long oval shape than neutral (that's how mine feels as well). FWIW they now make a Bell RS2, although it's more suited to street duty now with a drop down sun visor. The Bell Vortex (and possibly Qualifier) had the same shape as well, although the Vortex is no longer sold either.
HJC FG-17 is also more long than neutral. I'd stay away from the CL-17 though, as it's round through and through.

You might be a “Long Oval.” Not many helmets offered, mine is Arai Quantum.

^This is good advice.
I went in to SSC to purchase a new Bell Star to replace my old, thinking it was the best fitting helmet ever. Jim educated me and got me into something that fit properly. I was buying helmets one size too big prior. And ended up w/ Arai Signet-X since the Bell Star one size smaller did not allow me to wear my sunglasses! Jim patiently helped navigate brands and models to fit my needs.
I really don't know why I had a brain fart and didn't think to go get fitted. If I ever have, it was at a Cycle Gear a billion years ago. Gonna hit a local shop this week, and if I don't get a warm and fuzzy about that I'll come see your guys Scotty, thanks!
Def a "long oval" head.
