This is totally effed up. Think about what we are contemplating. We are considering putting kevlar cables around our wrist b/c stupid assholes that live in the ghetto are rollin up to us stealing our shit.
This sounds to me like an even better reason to ride with a group or partner.
Chris,
Post up a pic. We should all be lookin out for this piece o' shit.
when they catch him, I wouldn't want the helmet back, it is damaged goods IMHO that is unrepairable
to me a helmet is personal, like underwear, would you wear somebody elses dirty underwear?
I would want reimbursement so I could buy another new one that no one but myself has worn

Sorry to hear that crap happened to you, you did the right thing. I mean you never know what jackass is going to pull a gun/knife on you. Anyway keep us informed as to what the police do about it.

Can you post a pic of the helmet so I can see what it looks like? I'll be at Bike Night in Lowell and I'll keep an eye out for you if you want

Dude.. you were face to face with the kid. You know the kid! Im not saying your a puss for letting him walk off with your lid, but how is anyone knowing him here gonna help you? Granted you were alone and he had friends in the car but you were wearing a helmet and hopefully armor!
Good luck, atleast you got the plate!
Edit: After reading two pages worth of replies I've thought this over. You said you are a passive guy. What you should have said is that you _were_ a passive guy. I grew up in Springfield and had to deal with shit like this growing up all the time. At age 10 or 11 I think I had enough, and just started fighting back regardless of the odds. It was then I realized you only have to act the part dude, be convincing. This guy got a read that you weren't gonna fight for your lid when you started talking about having a receipt. He knew he culd act like the biggest hard ass and not have to throw a single punch cuz you sure as hell werent going to. Next time get off the bike, put your carbon fiber covered knuckles up, dont take your lid off, and your armored jacket on and just walk right at him.. Chances are he backs off, if not, smash his fucking face in, if his friends were in the car still when he approached you, chances are they would have sped off, if they had his back they would have gotten out with him.
You live you learn, dont eat yourself up over it.

Man, thats fucked up! For someone to come outta nowhere and jack you like that. Its simple, plain old robbery. Its one helluva unique way to steal a helmet. I hope the cops look into this and find him, since you got the plate number. Not sure what to tell you about how best to handle it as far as fighting back. You were the one being accosted, and only you had to deal with it. You have only seconds to decide what course of action to take. On the one hand, if you start "discussing" it with him, trying to reason with him, ie: you can show him the receipt, etc., youre playing into his hands, and allowing him to control the situation, and give him confidence in his actions and that he has nothing to fear from you. Conversely, if you had kept the helmet on, which you should have done anyway if for no other reason than to not let him dictate how things will progress, AND for protecton, and decide to physically take him on and beat his ass, then youre also taking a big risk. You dont say how big he was, etc. Were you a match? Sure, you could decide to go at it, but think...he may have a knife or gun on him...he may be drugged up and have no qualms about taking your life. Maybe you start beating his ass...who's to say his buds wont join in, and you are severely beaten or worse? You have to weigh all the options, but think: is it worth dying or being fucked up over a helmet? Get the cops involved, like you did, and keep on them!! Like I said, only you were there to assess which route to take with this fucking idiot. Im just glad you werent hurt, etc. Let us know how things go.....

OK. It's been 2 days What did the cops say? If you got the plate number they should already have the guy and your helmet. I would be calling the police and raising hell by now. Don't let up on them if they are not doing the job you pay them for.
You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.
Good point...
When faced with this situation, I think of BigRed's Rule #6

so... i show you my wheel and stoneman hits me?
not likely
take your pick on which one ISN'T happin'.
You were legimately concerned with correcting the hardship with an irrational person, but you only know now that there was no hardship. There was no 'right' thing to do aside from end the situation. Whether it be take the helmet off and give it to him, or headbutt him into traffic - it's behind you now. Be glad you have your life, and didn't get any organs perforated. It's only money and you'll get more...you only get one shot at life.
Just another reason to wear lots of armor no matter what the temperature and keep an eye on who's behind you. I had a similar incident the first summer I ever had a bike, on Main St. in Nashua(NH) in evening traffic. Someone bumped my rear tire as they were stopping. I kept the bike up and got instantly pissed. As I went for the kill switch I checked the mirror and saw the passenger moving and his door opening - something just told me that didn't make sense and I said 'f this' and left. I didn't know what was going on I just knew I didn't want to be part of it. I later found out this wasn't an uncommon means for people to lose their bikes in almost the same location as I might have.
Now that you know, and you lost a 500$ helmet to a pirate, it's happened and you'll be more clear of mind next time hopefully (if there ever is a next time, but this is Lowell..).
Harass the shit out of the cops, as it sounds like this probably wasn't the first time this pos has done this and won't be the last.
Next time you already have the plan made right?
