actually I was not aware of F650 as the BMW entry level bike. MY BAD.

but beemer is suppose to be tough so dropping is not an issue. on the other hand gixxer probably runs better after 500 drops.

When was the last time you tried backing your bike up on an uneven grassy surface? It ain't easy.
My bikes is a 500 and I can hardly back it up on a flat surface, cause my legs are too damn short. Doesn't mean it's the wrong bike for me.

    Jennay, be happy you're tall!

Greater Boston Motor Sports, I think I'll avoid dealing with them.
Actually the lessons are free, and the gear that I mentioned was a solar-powered battery tender that was available through a random website, not through their store. They also didn't push their clothing or accessories on me, in fact that was one of my complaints - I wish they'd told me more about that stuff at first, what the differences in products are and what was available by catalogue. I ended up going to Riverside in Union Square to buy my helmet, boots, jacket and pants (though it was no loss for me because they've been awesome, too).

As for the bike being above my level, it's something I spoke with A LOT of people about - a few say it's too big, a lot say it's a good fit, and some say it's a perfect first bike. So as far as I can tell, reasonable minds can disagree. It felt like a good fit to me when I sat on it and bounced it around, and keep in mind that I'm 5'11."

Yes I bought a brand new 636, and it was far too big of a bike according to everyone, and yes I dropped it while I was backing down an uneven dirt hill into a shed and I was bullshit that I dropped it.

Well I've had it for 3 seasons, I haven't crashed on the street yet, I have crashed at the track twice with my track bike. I regret buying a brand new bike, I think it was stupid, but would I buy a 600 inline 4 again? Yes, you just need to be mature enough to understand that it could very easily kill you if you try to be billy badass on it.

Yup, I have no intention of being a speed demon any time soon, if ever. Still, the track does look like fun. The way you guys lean into the turns is incredible - how long does it take to be able to do that?

Also, are only sport bikes allowed at the track, or are their tracks where people with different kind of bikes can zip around a bit faster than they could on the street? What does it mean for a bike to only be track-friendly, not street-friendly? I know my bike isn't built for racing, and I'm not gonna soup it up into some ridiculous mutt of a racing bike, I'm just curious.

It's easy to drag a knee. The hard part is keeping the rest of your body from dragging behind your knee and I'm sure you'll hear from plenty of asphalt surfers like myself .... that just isn't any fun.

You can bring any bike to the track.
"Track friendly bikes"? I think you mean racer replicas. GSXRs, R1/6, Ninjas. Bikes the pros race turned into street bikes sold to support the racing.
As long as the bike has good ground clearance, Clarance, it'll be fun on track.
    You won't have a problem.
But, don't sign up just yet. Learn to control your bike without thinking about first.

Now, where is this week's lesson? Can we come watch?

Check out Max BMW track days-this may be what your looking for if you want to use your bike. I believe they do their track day events with Bruce and Leslie Meyers from Fishtail riding school. MAX BMW Motorcycles Track Day Event Calendar

So long as you're tall enough to be able to keep the bike upright when it starts tipping on you at a stop light, you shouldn't have much problem with it. Of course, make sure not to go nuts with the throttle OR the brake, that's the other place you'll run into trouble.

When I got my bike+gear last year, I meant to just go around to all the local stores and see what they had, then buy online. Of course, nothing is really LOCAL to Boston. I walked around in Brockton Cycles (HUGE gear selection, but nothing great), Bikeworx in Maynard (small selection, good prices), and MotoMarket in Acton (great stuff, very $$$). I ended up buying the RevIt Ignition jacket I saw at MotoMarket, and I'm glad I did. It's a leather+kevlar mesh jacket which is great for all seasons. It keeps me riding safe even when it's 95 degrees out, and it's the envy of my friends with their solid+perf leather sweating their balls off. For a helmet I ended up getting a cheap HJC from Bikeworx. Motomarket tried to push me on the Arai, but none of them really fit me well to be worth the huge price.
