    Holy hard brake lever, Batman!

I had had it with the mush that was the braking system on my race bike. It had a Nissin radial master off an 08 GSX-R1000 and the stock 2 piston calipers.

Even with a brand new set of carbon brake pads, the lever was still mush. Even after constant bleeding.

Since I have no intention on running SuperSport, as bike is disqualified due to engine work and the upper fork tubes from a 97 ZX6R, I picked up a few bits that have made my braking system 1000 times better.

I grabbed a 16x18 Brembo master (from eBay), which is stock from an 08 R1.

I also picked up a set of SV Racing Parts 4 piston caliper adapters for 4 pot Tokico calipers. And for twice the power, I picked up a set of 4 piston Tokico calipers from an 04 SV1000 off a member of the SVRider board.

It didn't take much bleeding and the brake lever is now solid. I can't wait to get the bike back up on the track. If anyone with an SV650 wants better braking and doesn't want to do the whole GSX-R front end swap thing, this is simple enough to do. I had it done inside 90 minutes, including safety wiring and bleeding.

I think you're gonna find that radial master is overkill for the bike with those calipers.

If this were two weeks ago I'd probably give you a bunch of crap about buying unnecessary fancy bits. But your times are showing you're going to need that extra slowing help. Congrats on the upgrades. Enjoy.

I guess time will tell. I'm back on the track Monday and Tuesday of next week and have the bike mostly together (sans plastics).

Are you talking about the Nissin? I'm thinking that this is the reason the lever is so mushy. The MC may be in need of a rebuild. I had planned on looking into a rebuild kit and stuffing it into my spares box, in case something bad happens to the R1 MC. (like a crash)

I had looked into the Accossato MC, but didn't feel like paying over $200 for just the MC. Racing budget is getting tighter already.

i assume you went with the 08 R1 master instead of an RCS because of price? what did you get the R1 master for? i'm guessing around $50.

have you considered looking into 06+ R6 calipers with the spacers? it'll cost around $60 and is a nice upgrade for cheap.

    Good job Chuck.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to bleed the brakes on my 600RR: http://www.nestreetriders.com/forum/...ding-help.html

I'm hoping that I do not have to purchase new equipment.

    Sorry for the thread jack

I wish I paid $50. It was actually quite a bit more than $50. I have been watching for a while now. They average about $125 now on eBay and that's what I got mine for. You have to be lucky that no one is watching an auction to grab one for $50. I actually saw one go as high as $225, which is really stupid, since you can almost get a new Brembo 19x18 for that price. If I were to buy the R1 setup new, it would be about $250, with the reservoir.

The 06+ R6 calipers are radial and no one makes a radial adapter kit for stock SV forks, so I have to settle for 4 piston standard calipers.

To me, this route made more sense. If I went with the whole GSX-R front end swap, I'd have to incur the cost of the front end, fork work, new head bearings, a GSX-R front wheel, calipers, and clip-ons. SInce I had PK do the cartridge work on the stock SV forks over the winter, the GSX-R swap isn't the right choice for me.

The cost for my project was around $300. That's the MC, calipers, pads, and adapter brackets. The cost of a GSX-R front end swap would be $1000-$1200 when all is said and done. If you count the fork work, I'm into the SV front end for about $850.

wow, that's a lot for a stock M/C. glad you found one for a relative average selling price. i probably would have just gone with the RCS if I were spending over $100 for a M/C

I sat there for days looking back and forth at used vs new Brembo and Accossato MCs. I tried to snipe a couple of used Brembo MCs, but lost out when the bids went over $150, which was my cut-off.

I just couldn't justify over $200 for just the MC, since I was also replacing the calipers. So, we'll see how the new setup works out on Monday.

Will be riding the SV as a naked bike, since the fairing stay won't be in by then.

This is for GSXR forks, not SV forks.

If you don't have the tools to do the rebuild, let me know. Just rebuilt the master on my Honda and the worst part was getting to the circlip for the plunger as it was buried in the bore. The rest was easy as pie.

If you decide you don't want to keep it, let me know.

the stock m/c on your bike is more than up to the task. I swapped over my Brembo RCS last year and it was a very small difference. Certainly not a few hundred $ difference but I already had the Brembo from my old bike.

Thx Brett!! The number one reason for inadvertently replacing the master cylinder is improper bleeding...which is primarily what my problem is.

That master is the reason the system is mushy. When my bike was still sitting on the showroom floor, I could pull the lever to the bar. Add stainless lines, because I hate the mushy lever too, and it helped a little but I can still pull the lever to the bar. On other forums, bike specific, lets just say tons of people complained about the same thing. Mushy, add stainless lines and that helped some but the way to completely cure it was to replace the master.

Not trying to piss in your Cheerios Bergs, but that master really is the absolute worst component Suzuki put on the 07/08 bikes. If you wanted to dissect the thing, have at it...but if you wanted to use it on a bike? I'm not sure it's worth your time.

I think you're gonna find that radial master is overkill for the bike with those calipers.
Brian- Having talked to you last year at a Bomo day I know your SV650s has an 00-03 GSXR 750 front fork setup. Which MC are you running? The stock GSXR unit?

I have been looking for something to improve the lever feel on my 01 GSXR 750 and short of doing a 04-05 GSXR front fork conversion I am interested in hearing what can be done with the master cylinder to improve performance.

I'll have to verify but I believe the "Daytona" radial I have on my GS is just that same Nissin rebranded. I've never had a problem getting solid lever feel out of it.

I would love to take a stab at tossing yours on a brake system and seeing if I can coax good feel out of it.

What does tossing it on a brake system entail? And a couple bottles of fluid. I'm not sure that master will ever be up to par, I've read tons of negative posts about it. It's not dangerous, the bike will be cartwheeling up the road long before you get the lever close to the bar...just getting rid of the mushy doesn't seem to be anything anyone could do.

I really think it's more the calipers, as the R1 Brembo had the same mushy feel until I mounted the 4 pot calipers.

I think you made the right choice. If the brakes were the issue, fix that at the right price. When the forks become an issue, tackle it at that time. In other words, don't throw $50 at a $5 problem.

I think you got all the air out of the calipers this time and didn't last time and that's why the lever feels better now.
