listening music on the bike

i know not everyone likes or even condones listening to music while riding, but i do. i was looking for a way to control my i pod a little better while riding. my skullcandy wire allows me to pause, adjust volume and even skip tracks. it works better on my ski helmet than it does on the bike. skipping tracks is tricky with motorcycle gloves on since you have to double click a button.
i eventually just bought a usb style headset from white horse gear for $20. it works good but i cant do anything with it. so when i stop at a store i have to dig out the i pod and pause it. with my Touch that meant removing a glove. it also sucks when when im riding with friends if they start talking, i have a hard time making out what they are saying. i can hear important stuff like horns and sirens but someone talking to me is tough sometimes.
so i found this remote on amazon and ive been using it for the past couple of weeks and it seems to work pretty good. i can adjust volume, skip, pause and it does a couple other things that i either dont know or dont care...maybe both.
the buttons are not recessed but more flush so i can see it being a problem with bulkier gloves as the buttons arent huge. i manage with my shorty leather summer gloves. it came with 2 mounts. one is a arm/wrist strap so you can wear it like a watch and the other is a steering wheel mount. this is the one i use on the bike. instead of using the supplied velcro strap i used 2 zip ties and positioned the controller over the clutch master so it wont spin when i push the buttons. i also put a tether on it so i dont lose it.
the only thing ive noticed is, if the ipod shuts off/times out when paused then the remote doesnt work. if you unplug the receiver and plug it back in then it works. not that big of a deal since i pull the ipod out of my pocket to attach the headphones anyway so i just unplug the receiver and plug it back in.
im sure there are others on here that listen to music also so i figured id post this up. pretty sure this works on i phones as well but i dont have one so i dont know if and how well it works. the receiver does have a charge through hook up at the bottom so you dont have to remove it to charge your device.

I have a Scala Rider Q3 that has a built in FM radio, which is really handy...
I currently use a Sena SMH10-11 with Pandora... which is nice. Tap the wheel to skip songs, etc...

I don't really do it often... only on group rides where no one else has a com and we're slabbing somewhere.

99% of the time... all I want to hear is the bike.

I rock this case while riding street, and snowboarding. I put it in my left pocket, its raised up and leaves the wheel exposed on the ipod, so based on feel (even with gloves on) i can skip songs. Repeat and go back, or start a playlist over. Dont really know what more "control" you are looking for, but this has done the trick for me for years.

I don't have anyone to talk to either, but the used smh10 I bought has been a worthy investment.

Yeah this is why I didn't suggest the Sena. It's great, but really only if you have Bluetooth.

I use my Sena for music 99% of the time and nothing else. If your iPod doesn't have Bluetooth you can use a cable, but I don't think at that point the Sena can control the iPod.

BT headset >>> ear buds or what ever other micky mouse setup you can think of. It is so much more convenient. I pretty much only use mine for tunes. I use my phone.. I assume you're using an ipod or something?
With the phone it is easy. I pop my helmet on as I'm headed down the stairwell on my way out of the building leaving work. Down the hall I'm picking a play list. By the time I get to the bike I slap the key in the ignition and light 'er up.

The Sena whatever-whatever-5 I have is easy as pie to use. It's waterproof. It is loud enough to hear over highway wind noise. It's wireless. Very convenient. And the battery lasts long enough for 2-ish days commuting. It also takes the same charger as my phone, so I can charge it at my desk.

Yeah, it's overkill. I don't have anyone to talk to either. And I usually ignore calls and texts. But these things are seriously well thought out kit worth the dough.

I bought a remote a long time ago that controlled my iPod. It had an adaptor that plugged into the bottom and the actual remote was easy to use with gloves which I affixed to my triple tree. I think it was this one: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-iEZCli.../dp/B000HVHGI6

While it helped, it was no where near as convenient or effective as my Sena. I always listen to music on the street and have tried many music devices over the years. There's a reason why everyone here is saying Sena...

I stopped using an ipod about a year ago. I just use my cell phone. I usually just listen to internet radio (pandora app). I have a bunch of stations I usually listen to.

I've had the Scala for a few years and it works well except for FM reception. When it dies, not sure which brand I'll go with, but I will replace it with something similar.

You can dramatically improve the FM reception (from horrible to fair to poor) by leaving a charging cord installed in the Scala unit. I got a coiled cord and installed a USB power port on my bike so I can charge the Scala while riding.

bluetooth transmitter, bluetooth headphones and a solid ipod mount for the handlebars would work...the only problem is that now you have to worry about the battery in your ipod draining faster due to the transmitter plus the bluetooth headphone batteries
