    Re: Rain-X on helmet visor

...funny you should post this now...

I have had a long running internal debate with myself about whether to try it or not. Confilicting threads and information...including the statement on the Rain-X bottle itself which says it's not for use on plastic.

Anyway, last week I tried it on the shield(s) of my Nolan Flip Up touring helmet. Works great.

I wouldn't put it on my Arai unless someone else posted from personel experience that its OK. I think it can funk up some plastics!

I've used it on my visors before and it works great.

I've used it on sunglassess too. It works great when jet skiing or windsurfing.

over time, rain-x will degrade the plastic BUT

you will have replaced your visor long before it's even noticable for other reasons

I don't use the rain-x treatment, but I do use the orange rain-x winshield wash fluid in a small pump spray w microfiber cloth to clean my visor

I find that it not only sheds water in the rain, also, dirt & bugs do not adhere to the visor as well, so it's easier to keep clean and I don't have to clean it as often

What a great tip! I even have some of that stuff in my garage! Just emptied the little 'cleaner' bottle I carry with me and filled it with this stuff...

    Good boy...

I wish I had even thought of using Rain-X on my shield at the April track day. The only place on the track that I could generate enough speed to clear the water was on the strait. Then I basically rode blind around the rest of the track. Good times...

I spray a bit of the honda polish on a microfiber cloth
which seems to help and is great for getting rid
    of all the bugs

Now that's pretty good advise... I would not have thought of that outcome. (I wouldn't have rain-x'ed my windscreen either...)

    Re: Rain-X on helmet visor

Yeah I was having some issues with slow speed misting the other day around town. Tried wiping it off, but that didn't help too much. I had to resort to flipping it up at some points to be able to see.

I'll try some on my extra helmet to see how that goes.

Maybe I'll add a strip of silicone like I have on my snowboarding gloves, lol

Has anyone seen evidence either way as to the implications on shield shatter resistance? Or, put another way, has anyone taken a good-sized piece of gravel or such to the shield after a season's worth of Rain-X use?

I've been using the orange rainx windshield fluid for the past 3 helmets, (200,000 miles or so) shields usually last me about 30,000 miles or so

I've been hit with a multitude of objects, acorns mostly though

I try my hardest not too, but sometimes you just get caught in it. I keep a tiny bottle of rain ex and cloth in a zip-lock under my seat. I love it, when I need it.

    Re: Rain-X on helmet visor

i use rain-x on all my visors, hjc, arai, icon.. never had a shatter issue never had anything but a good result. bugs come of easier rain cleats better at slower speeds though you still have to do the turn you head trick. it even clears slush though i do try to avoid riding when it is actually snowing.

i like the washer fluid trick i am going to start doing that. i have switched to using that in my cages.. sooo much better..

and in response to riding in the rain. if it is above freezing or the pavement is dry. i will ride.

I have been using Cat Crap on my Shoei and HJC for years, never had any problem and bugs come off real easy without smearing. I keep a small spray bottle with water mixed with car wash soap(real mild stuff) and microfiber cloth for giving it a good cleaning without it removing the cat crap. It works great for making rain bead up and roll off.

DON'T use it on coated shields. It will take the finish off.
Sample a little section of the shield that does not show before you apply.
I was using it on my shield a few years back and Chris Watts wanted to give it a go. I had the spray type and he slightly misted the shield and it just spotted the shield and it could not be rubbed out.
