How long/far have you ridden on a sport bike?

So I'm planning a trip out to Flint, Michigan from Boston to see a bunch of my college friends (I went there for school) and I was thinking about throwing a bag on the backseat of my bike (a 600rr) and hitting the road.

How far have you guys ridden on a sport bike? I have done 4 hours... but nothing more. This trip is a 11 hour trip when going through Canada. I think I might break it up into two days (stop in Syracuse, NY) and make it easier.

So have any of you guys done anything this epic? How have to done it? Any good advice? Any necessary gear that will help out with the road wear? I'm thinking about buying some gel under-armor pants to go underneath my leathers.

    What do you guys think?

Re: How long/far have you ridden on a sport bike?

That's crazy if you ask me. I could see that trip on a sport touring bike or cruiser, but not on a supersport. I ride my bike for a long(ish) 2/3 day trips sometimes, logging in 300-400 miles in a day on some backroads. And I feel beat after a day like this. Put 2-3 days like that together, and when I come back home, I don't wanna see the bike for at least a week If you're planning to take highways all the way, it's gonna be even worse. How bout the trip back? Riding again? That will be the worst part!

2 days should be no big deal..I wouldn't hesitate..ive done a number of 400 mile days and its never been too bad..... Id try to get off the bike by like 3pm on day one and get back on midday on day 2....

I did 2600 miles in a week on my RC51 to Nova Scotia last year. You will be fine. Pace yourself and pack lite.

BTW, is it really only 11hrs to MI through Canada? When I moved from OH to MA, it took me like 14+ hrs in a cage (not through Canada).

EDIT: Perhaps I don't qualify for an Ironbutt award, judging from the other posts ^^^ 2600 miles in 1 week on rc51

Re: How long/far have you ridden on a sport bike?

done a handful of 6-8hr stints on a bike, but they're usually back-roads and sometimes traffic, so only like 250-300mi...

i figure 10hrs on a bike is 10hrs on a bike, regardless of being at 15mph or 100mph... the higher the speed, chances are you'll be more tense, so your shoulders/upper back would be more sore than otherwise, but aside from that, ass on seat time is ass on seat time...

Back when we used to go on group rides every weekend, I never had a problem riding 12-14 hours a day and logging 500+ miles...on a R1. Those were the days

    I'd go for it

Yeah, it's about 11-12. I've driven it roughly 20 or so times. It can be longer if the border security gives you trouble, or if the borders are jam packed with people on the weekends crossing over to drink underage/etc.

I'm going to have to contemplate this some more. Splitting the trip in two days each way will probably have to be a requirement.

I find the exact opposite. When I hit the highway I relax myself and let the wind and my legs hold me up. The only issues I have with the highway is boredom, and occasion leg cramp if I don't shift around enough.

Leave early, pace your self, and enjoy...sounds like a great trip.

The trip home will suck though.

I went to Mont Tremblant...about an hour further north of Montreal on my pevious Ninja 250...and I went to Kingston Ontario to see the speedboat races 2 years back on my Ninja 500...we were with Kirk on this trip..had a lot of fun. Went across the Adirondacks NY...I'd do it again in a heartbeat...both trips were with NESR members, all were riding sportbikes.

I've done 8 hours on the TT but it's a bit more relaxed than the newer supersports. Highway riding really fatigues you though, just a warning. I did 4 hours to Oswego NY last year and I wanted off half way through. Course it was bad enough going back hung over and still trippin on mushrooms.

I went to Niagra and back in two days...mostly back roads so it was over 1k miles, but prob about 24 hours of seat time...on an RR.

The last 30 miles at night was a killer.

Went to the Cabot Trail on the northern tip of Nova Scotia on the 675 last year. Left on a Tuesday, back on a Sunday: 2300 miles +

Plan on taking the 675 to the Indy GP races and back via the dragon this September as well. Make sure you get your rest, take a lot of picures (serves as a good ass break too), and have a good time!

Sometime late august or early september I believe I'll be going. It is dependent on a party that a bunch of my friends are throwing.

I will definately be getting alot of rest for the trip. Pictures will definately be a good idea... stop at Niagara and maybe some spots through canada or in upstate NY.

Any luggage suggestions? Tank bags? Tail bags? Etc? I know I need a strapped tank bag as the RR has plastic covering the tank (or is a plastic tank, something to that effect) so I was thinking maybe a cortech tank bag?

Do these come in handy for leaning onto them when you get tired, or is that a bad idea in general?

and thank you guys for all of your responses!

I use a Marsee tank and tail bag on my RR. They make a great product.

No issue for leaning or performance.

Is it a strapped on tank bag or were you able to get a magnetic version to work?

Strapped.....you can't put a magnetic on the tail of an RR.

Re: How long/far have you ridden on a sport bike?

if you are highway riding you can lean into the wind and it will hold you up. i find having a camel pack or a hydration pack in the bag is a good thing for long rides. also get some waterproof compression sacks for you stuff. they make nice pillows when you need to nap at a rest area.

they were invaluable on my trip to southern VA 1800 miles in 4 days.

oh and underarmor can be washed in hotel sinks and will be dry in the morning. it also packs smaller.
