    Rider down 93 s today

I was stuck in horendous traffic this morning and just heard why. Apparently a bike accident occured early this morning around 6am on 93 south. It involved a bike and happened in the area of 93 that is being resurfaced. I have ridden this area and it is extremely dangerous so I am not surprised at all. Hopefully whomever it was is ok. Riders beware. This area is bad with big bumps and grooved pavement.

arg, never like seeing these threads, particularly such rapid fire as we've been having lately.

hope the rider's fine and the bike's no worse for wear.

93 is a fucking shit show. Nick, Pete and I took it to the pose a few weeks ago and there is damn near jumps in the highway. Not so bad if you see them, but people are locking thier brakes when they notice them at the last second, or hitting them at speed and knocking shit out of the back of thier vehicle. Shown by the motorcycle killer that Pete and I dodge that was in the road (large piece of bent metal). I don't like that road at all right now, but I like the Tobin even less.

Good point. I take 93s to the fells then follow that down to medford and route 16. Much safer route than 93. I started going that way after hitting one of those "jumps" someone mentioned. Scared the shit out of me.

I have been commuting that section everyday....and everyday trying to see if it is yet safe for the bike.

For now, I am caging it since I get air on some of those on 4 wheels!!

    Shit sucks....

    Hope the ride is ok.

I heard about the traffic this morning, I'm sad it was because of a bike

I commute in that area everyday and it is a shitshow. At least they seem to be repaving it reasonably quickly (by MA standards).

damn, that sucks... no wonder there was so much traffic this morning. They musta had it all cleared up by the time I got to it though cuz I didn't see anything on 93s between 128 and Boston & I got to work at a little past 7.

I don't go that far east, but 495 is having work done in the area of RT9/90 so be careful in there as well...tough to read all these threads about riders going down. Scary or sketchy grooved pavement can get at speeds.

Re: Rider down 93 s today

It's worthy of mentioning with all this 'stimulus' money floating around, states are going to be full-force no holds barred getting road work done at a very fast pace since there is no 'budget' so to speak. We need to be cognizant of this at all times and remember that a road we travel today may be a grooved or gravel road tomorrow! Don't assume you 'know' the state roads right now!

The most amazing part I find is that any given state dictates the road worthiness of our vehicles but in no way dictates the vehicle worthiness of its own roadways.

I do feel for our fellow rider that went down.

But Pigman will attest to me getting about a ft of air under my rear tire on 93s about 2 weeks ago. I like to bunny hop speed bumps, raised sewer covers, anything that I can launch off of. But 93 is no joke. Only because I'm used to having the rear tire up in the air was I able to control that one.

Hope the rider that went down is ok

This is SUPER true. there is a blind corner/offramp deal off of RI route 1 in South Kingstown that heads to Saugatucket Rd. from southbound. I used to nail this 90 degree turn at like 50+. I just drove it (in my car) today and noticed that the state cut a SECTION of the road out to bury some pipes (and jimmy hoffa) and just left it dirt. in the middle of the corner. with no warning, that would be a dirt nap for sure on a bike...

RIP to the rider. too much bad news lately.

Re: Rider down 93 s today

i think a lot of this lies with the irresponsibility of the state to make proper use warnings.

everyone always sees the ROAD WORK SPEED LIMIT 45 signs, but disregards them because 80% of the time the road work has been completed for 2mo and noone saw fit to pay people to take down the damn signs on time.

if you have speed limit warnings and expect people to abide by them, don't apply them carelessly.

if you saw a sign that says BIG FUCKING BUMP AHEAD, i guarantee you'd slow down. but 95% of the time i see a BUMP sign, i drive half a mile and then realize "oh, the bump they were referring to was a quarter of the size of some potholes in my town (all of which are unmarked)." you get accustomed to this after it happening year in year out, and then all of a sudden you're driving down 93SB and see a BUMP sign, only to find yourself 3' in the air and about to crack your suspension mounts because the BUMP they were referring to was a 6" steeply-graded launch ramp, rather than a 1/2" chop or pothole in the pavement like it usually is...

now i know that ultimately it is solely the responsibility of the rider, but that shouldn't make it alright for the state to willfully mislead its roadgoers just to check and make sure they're 110% alert after a lengthy history of conditioning a habit for disregard.

Just put in some "New Ramps/Jumps' on 93 s this am. Be careful. Fast lane is paved now with new asphalt except on a few of the absolutely most dageroyus sections like th bridges and overpasses. How sick is that?
