I had put on a new set of pilot power 2cts on my ktm. The rear is already down to the wear bars in the middle (which is where the harder compound should be). I've probably got an estimated 4-5k out of the rear. That seems low. On such a low HP, lightweight bike I had anticipated at least twice that. The general consensus over on smj was that the 36 psi I was running in the previous tires was too high. So I've been running 30 psi per the manual. Is this what's causing my accelerated wear?

low tire pressure
unlike car tires that hi pressure will wear the center and low pressure will wear the edges, pressure in motorcycle tires regulates the tire temperature, wear pattern is based soley on whether yer riding on straight roads (center wear) or curvy roads (edge wear)
lowering pressure will do nothing except make the tire heat up more and wear faster where ever the tire making it's contact patch

5k doesn't seem low to me. You ride a bike with a lot of torque and engine braking. Plus a lot of those miles were hard riding.

For 2ct's thats about right, I am on my third set. The price you pay for sticky road tires! Plus we had a lot of hard use down south!
Find out about those slicks yet?

I want to come up with something clever about skids and backing it in, but it eludes me.

Everything above also there is a common misperception with the 2cts that the center is harder than the powers. Its actually not the center tread is the same but the sides are softer. 2cts don't give you more mileage just better side grip.

Same bike, came with brand new Shinkos when I purchased it lasted 5,500 miles. Replaced with Avon Distanzias, lasted 4,800(BALD AS something smooth), replaced with Conti SuperMotos, little under 2,000 still on the bike. 30-32 psi.
Pilot Power 2CTs on my Hyper lasted 5,400.

4-5 k is normal life from those tires.
Running tires lower than correct pressure for your bike is the main cause of premature tire wear/failure.
I run 36psi in my 2CTs. anything close to 30 feels sluggish
I'm at just over 5k miles and still have a good bit of life left. I keep wanting an excuse to get new tires, since I have a patch on the rear. But they aren't dying anytime soon.

i dont want to run slicks on the street
well i was going by the consensus on SMJ that 36 on a supermoto is too high. they actually said 26-28. i went with 30 since thats what the frame said. maybe ill try 36 and see how the wear is on them then

well let me stop you there by throwing in that you shouldn't be adjusting the PSI for better wear, but for performance. I just happen to really like the way the bike feels around 36 on the 2CTs.

not true. I use totally different pressures for track vs. street use. both car and bike

Yes you lower pressure for more grip and sacrifice tire wear.
