My first Kanc Ride (report) :)

Finally back from a loooong but awesome day of riding a13x and I had never ridden the Kanc before so we set out this afternoon to see the famed roadway ourselves. But first, we had to make a few pit stops. First we rolled up to Loudon to check on our camper, no break-in and nothing was amiss, so we head back out so I could finally see weirs beach. Never seen it before, bike week or not. Grab a bite to eat and then we decided we better practice our body positioning before we hit the ill-nasty roads up ahead

Then we set off on routes 25 and 16 to head up to the Kanc. Scenery was gorgeous- the lake, trees, everything! we even ran into a classic car show and popped in to take a looksie.

we finally roll up on the Kanc. we hit the kanc traveling east-west and the road had tons of wide sweeping turns to begin with, some so-so areas in the middle, and then the grand finale of tight turns at the end. The scenery was way too distracting- the rapids, falls, peaks and trees. The Kanc was a nice ride, but I'm not sure it held up to the expectations I had from all the talk it garnered. At any rate, still had a good time seeing it all.

And the lousiest part of the trip concluded with a bum rush home on 93.... freeway riding blows Anywho, thus concludes our 350 mile trip of the day

Nice report. I am planning to hit the Kanc again soon. I took it back in May or June in my Evo and that was a blast. The speeds that can be reached through some of those corners way amazing. I'm excited beyond words to try it out on the bike.

Thanks for giving us an "insiders review"

Re: My first Kanc Ride (report) :)

it use to be my favorite road on a bike...

then I did a few trackdays...

It's still a awesome ride, a lot of fun things to do up there. I love it. Hit the Kanc at the right time and theres no traffic...hit it at the wrong time and its miserable. The hairpin is the best part.

Scenery you can't beat...very pretty. A lot of good hiking up around that area as well.

Awesome pics Jen. I have only done the Kanc once (last summer), but I want to do it again. Although it makes for an ever longer ride, Hurricane Mountain Rd is a must see. That road is crazy. Glad you had fun! See you in a few weeks (we've missed you at the track!)

Re: My first Kanc Ride (report) :)

Sounds like alot of fun. I have been on the Kanc at least a dozen times this year. It is a fun road with sweeping corners that allow a high carry speed through them:-) Bear notch can be alot of fun, but it is fairly bumpy. We usually do the kanc, hmr, and Evans notch when we roll through their.

FYI the roads in the Colebrook Vt. area have just been paved and are awesome.

Re: My first Kanc Ride (report) :)

Yea it was a good days riding. Kanc was okay, I've honestly been spoiled by riding the Bay Area SF roads. We had zero traffic on the Kanc though and that was nice. We rolled through it about 7:00pm-7:30pm as I recall. The cars we did come across we just leap-frogged over (the headsets made that much easier). Road was nice thou. Next time up we'll have to hit some of those other ones you guys have mentioned.

Really enjoyed the ride from Loudon up to Weir's and Weir's up through the Kanc. Just so scenic and fun. Find the Cruise Night on the side of the road, goofing in the penny arcade, playing skeeball, that's the good stuff.

I gotta give a shout-out to my boys at Cardo Systems for hooking me up with some Scala Rider II headsets. We chatted non-stop for 6.5 hours before the batteries finally died! (during our ride back home on 93S). Made the riding much more enjoyable being able to talk, share sights, coordinate things, etc. It was also nice when we were on the freeway heading North and a truck tried to come into my lane. I didn't notice it at first until I heard Jen say 'WATCH OUT FOR THAT TRUCK COMING OVER'. They make riding safer I've noticed.. Next time I'll throw the charger in the bag to give them some juice during food stops.

Here's another link to our ride via my GPS software I had running on my iphone along with data. This is Loudon -> Weir's -> Conway -> Lincoln -> Concord and some of the data

Alex GPS uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone 3G and is sharing with you the following track:

The Diapermotard was great. Such a good bike for that type of riding. I wish I had some saddlebags on it. I'd enjoy a adventure bike greatly I think. When I'm on the street I just can't really get a thrill out of going all that fast. Even on the big Kanc smooth sweepers I was just cruising along.

    1) The Kanc is by far the most beautiful place I've ever seen in the fall. I grew up in Berlin, about 30 mins north, have been there a billion times and it still takes my breath away.

    2) I'm telling Doc about your helmet

    3) Alex

    4)

    That is all.

Nice report, short with a few pictures Never been that way myself but aiming to give it a try later this year. You even got a pic of the nose of the Mt. Washington at the pier in your Weirs photo, damn I feel like I am 9 again now...

RE: The Cardo's - we used Rider II's (just upgraded from a Rider Teamset) for about 22 hours total without recharging em earlier this year on a trip to Mi. On standby (ie: using VOX mike and not constantly chattering) they use hardly any energy, I love those things. For the price they cannot be beat either..
