The announcement about the banquet this year got me thinking about last year's banquet. I thought it was a well run event and had a lot of fun. Probably more than I should have but that's not where I'm going with this. There was one thing that really caught me off guard last year. Maybe I'm alone in this, I dunno, but here goes nothing.
Each year as we sign in we get an opportunity to vote for a peer award that goes to honor someone that has helped out their fellow racers. Last year it was given to Buffington, a friggin Legends car guy. WTF? Maybe the LRRS racers didn't vote or didn't cast enough votes in any one direction. This year I want to start a movement to get people thinking of it ahead of time so the award stays in our "family".
Along those lines I want to make a nomination/suggestion. The time spent on the race track is important, but one of the main reasons I still race are the relationships I form with my racing brethren. The bonds I form with my fellow racers are strong and I hope will last many years after I retire. These bonds are formed more in the garages and infields than they are on track. They are formed laughing around campfires and bench racing from behind bottles of beer (or wine, or whatever). There is one family that has regularly tried to bring us all together over a common need. Macaroni and cheese. I say we nominate Adam Butler as the representative of that family and send him the community "thank you" that he deserves.
Thanks

In for going to the banquet and in for supporting and voting for Adam.
Adam not only is a great racer but has organized one of the greatest events associated with lrrs, the Saturday night cookout. Always great food, tons of laughs and amazing times. A generation that we kept alive in front his RV even this weekend while he was at the hospital.
Adam is always open to offer a hand or give advice or make fun of me. Him and his family represent an amazing example of what a racing family looks like.
Also if there is a contest where we can vote for the best cookies, his wife Wendy should receive double the support (I am not joking, if you haven't had one of her cookies I don't know why you race and are in the center garages).
As soon as I finish this crazy plate full of BBQ awesomeness I'll waddle up and second that...
I am well beyond 100% behind that nomination.

I find it ironic that you started this thread John, since I know a ton actually nominated you last year. And the reason why I think is well demonstrated in your first post. All that said, I am totally on board.

I don't remember voting or anyone being nominated.could haven been the pre-game bottle of champagne in the room. who knows but now I want to meet this Butler person. Funny how the two garages are like two different worlds. I wonder if that make the infield like outer space?

I can't really say that Shaun's selection was completely out of left field. When Rick Doucette was interested in checking out Legends racing in anticipation of his son running Bandoleros this season, Shaun provided him with a car and a lot of help in order to get comfortable in the series. I'm sure he must have gotten some LRRS votes for that.
He also helped Taylor Martin out a lot when a few of the other competitors weren't too thrilled with the idea of having a female racer amongst them.

I didn't mean to say it wasn't deserved. I don't know Shaun. I had just assumed it was an LRRS award as it had existed prior to Legends joining us at the banquet. Clearly I was mistaken.

Nope, I think it's only two years old. Denny won it the first year.
LRRS has the John Bettencourt Award, usually given to a racer, and the Karen Hornbecker Award, usually given to a non racer.
It's a big world out there in the paddock. In addition to LRRS, Penguin and Legends, I work in an official capacity with the USCRA (vintage motorcycles), VRG (vintage cars), NEAR (loose organization of vintage oval racers) and of course, the 24 Hours of LeMons (no explanation needed). I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with everyone from Dave Roper and Kevin Cameron to the cutie with Team Pro Crash Da Nation who happens to be a Transmission Specialist with Ford Motor Co. Engineering. So please forgive me if I don't have that "us and them" mentality.
BTW, this weekend I will be at NJMP as an official for a joint USCRA/VRG event. They'll be racing on 2, 3 and 4 wheels for three days.
