    Neal's april report

So this weekend was an interesting one. TONS of crashes, some friends had some injuries. Everyone walked away though, as far as I know. Now before I start wondering why I started doing all this.. I'm gonna post this quick report of my weekend.

Rain or not? Meteorology should not be called a science, period. It was supposed to rain on and off Saturday, but it turned out to be a beautiful day for the most part. Race 9, NV LWSS. Gridded 1A! Yay for Prereg. Anyway. Green drops, and i failed to launch the bike miserably, all but one rider goes right on by as I enter turn 1 second to last. Exiting turn 2, I pass 4 people. Entering turn 3, 5 people. Ok, now we're getting some where. By lap 5, I had chased the leaded and 2nd place down and within a lap and a half, had found a way by both. A few checks over my shoulder (while still making sure to apply full throttle this time!!) after a lap, and they were nowhere in sight. It just came together for me.

Sunday. Rain. But Julie said it was the 'pick of the weekend'!!! lol. wetish practice stunk, I wasnt feeling it. It dried up by the end of practice, and i gambled on full slicks for race 1, NV GTL. Now, this is one of those races that a lot of folks don't run because it is a blood bath. When I asked somebody if they were running GTL, they promptly replied 'hell no, that race is for crazy people.' LOL. Warm up lap shows me the whole track is dry, except for 11, and its just damp in the braking zone and a little bit in 11a. Lucky with the tire choice. I am in the 3rd wave, gridded on front row of my wave. Wave 1 goes. Wave 2. Now its on. Green drops and I just put my head down. Cold track, not thinking I'm gonna set any records, I just want to stay up and go the distance, as the only other GTLs I've entered were red flagged. I've got no idea if I can stay consistent for 20 minutes. I patiently hunt the lightweights, and I have no idea how deep the field is, so I just keep at it.. I start catching the guys in the 2nd wave, hmm thats a 600, theres another, and another... hmm am I in 1st? Whatever, I'll keep at it, no resting now. last lap, and I've gone by a few more people, but no more lightweights. Either I'm winning, or somebody else just checked the hell out. In the bowl on the last lap, I get split by the leaders of the GTU class, SHIT! They lapped me. ahh well. I take the checkered about 3 seconds after the leaders. No idea how I placed until the postings. Slow and steady wins the GTL, and I actually set my fastest lap ever, 1:24.194.

    Race 7, the interesting part.

125gp, wave 2, mixed in with the prod-twins wave. Its wet, I'm on rains. Only other 125gp rider bails on pregrid, i'm the only bike, bah, that aint racin. Lap 1, no worries, get by a few of the prod twin bikes, and all is well. I feel good. No, I feel great. No worries man, its a practice, you're the only bike in 125gp, just roll. Lap 2, brake for turn 1, all systems go. flick it in for 1a, dum de dum, steady as we.... where did the front end just disappear to? Oh. I am crashing. shit. I need to finish all 4 races to bump!! WTF! This isn't even a real race! I hop up, grab the bike and wheel and deal with the corner worker to let me rejoin. the bike is dirty, but fine. I hop on, they bump start me, and YAY I win. LOL what an embarassing crash. Oh well. Rick Lee got it all on film! I cant wait to see it.

Race 12, LWGP, I have had my head up my ass about the crash, and I am just thinking fuck this, it will rain, I'm running rains. By 1st call for race 11, I hear that its not damp... its quite dry now, and I'm making a mistake. But I dont feel like I've got the time to make race 12 if I switch tires. I decide to just deal with rains and the fun begins. Its a decent start, not too bad, but damn is the track dry. Dry like it was for GTL. A lap or two goes by, and the rains start to get mushy. Oh boy. By lap 3, they are marshmallows, and no sir, I don't like it. I dial it back to try to save my rains, running 1:31s, and the bike is still all over the place. It feels terrible, and I don't recommend it. Just finish, just finish, I thought. So I decided not to chase the Aprilia 550 motard down that I had been trying to catch for a few laps by out braking only and not by cornerspeed. settled for 4th place. missed the 4th wood by one position. Believe it or not, the tires dont look that bad at all. Hmm.
