That hour glass is a great idea! Do they make one a bit larger for my slow ass?

I have one of these that I got from Degs. http://www.aimsports.com/products/tg/index.html

Works great but I hardly use it. I might use it more now that I am going to do more trackdays than racing.

Re: Lap Timers - Educate Me

    Dan,
For what it's worth, I've got a GPS TraQr from MaxQData (link is in the attachment). Cost was $250.

It's a GPS reciever that downloads to your PC to give you just about any data you want from your run (speed, acceleration, est hp, etc..) in addition to lap times. The Word attachment is a screen shot so you can see what I mean.

In the screenshot, the Red line represents lap 3 and the blue line represents lap 4 and shows my speed around the track. I have the front straight in the "cross hairs" and it shows my max speed at 100.0 mph for lap 4 versus 97.6 for lap 3. You can see from the graph that my laps 3 and 4 were pretty consistent except for turns 6 & 9 where I held better roll speed on lap 4 - this difference is the primary reason for a nearly 4 second improvment in my lap times.

As a newbie this data is very useful for me to analyze mistakes and recognize improvments so I get the most out of limited track time.

Thanks. That may be worth the extra scratch, as it'd help me identify trouble spots and how changes effect my lap time as well as my times through a certain section. Food for thought at any rate.

Re: Lap Timers - Educate Me

I used a lap timer for the first time this past weekend. Initially it helped me gauge where I was with regards to the new bike I was riding. I could see a lap timer's value for gauging improvements as well as times relative to others on a new track, for example. Then again, I can also agree with the "if you're not in 1st your lap times aren't fast enough" stand point.

Both valid positions, IMO, and likely the reason I haven't sprung for one yet....I'm on the fence at the moment.

Seriously though, I've got an XT lap timer & beacon that I'm not using if you want it.... the outer case is a little cracked up as it was on my bike when I crashed, but it's still functional. Cheap. We'll talk if you're interested.

I have a Starlane GPS-R. GPS based laptimes with up to 4 splits. Waypoints are currently the start finish line, the camera window exiting T2, Apex of the bowl, and T10. I like it because I can see each of those sections for every lap. If I go out and decide to work on 11-11a-12 I can track my lines and see if it's having any effect on the times or the speed. It can use either 12v from the bike or 2 AA batteries. Find me in North garage 22 and if time allows we'll duct tape the damn thing to your bike and send you out with it. Oh.. and there's no transponders required on the wall.

Sweet. Let's talk. I don't think I'd have any use for a transmitter though, I'm told there is basically always one out @ NHMS. Then again, depending on your definition of cheap...

Hit me up on AIM or give me a call. I'm going to entertain myself with drunken biker karaoke while eating wings for dinner, so you may not get the quickest reply, but we'll talk all the same.

agreed, now that my first season is ending I am wanting a laptimer. I had plenty to worry about other than shaving seconds the first several weekends but now I need one to stay on point and stop going to slow in practice/when other bikes aren't around me.

Sounds good.... Like I said, it's a little busted up, but I'll price it accordingly. Just gotta confirm it actually still works

    I'll let ya know.

LRRS does not have an official beacon on the wall. I have authorized Jonathan Burbank to place his beacon as the unoffical unit on the wall right where the Gnome Hospitality Center is located. Anyone else who sees fit to put theirs on the wall should put it at that location, too. If Jonathan determines that there is a beacon elsewhere that is splitting lap times, he'll hunt it down and turn it off. If you have technical questions about your own unit, he will be more than happy to help you out. He is in Garage 21-N. (#23 Expert)
I am not responsible for enforcement of these guidelines. I am aware of one rider's father who turns off everyone else's beacon when he puts his out. If arguments over multiple beacons get to be a total PITA, I'll have Jonathan take them all down.

No, it's red and distracts riders.

(I've actually heard cornerworkers complaining on the radio about photographers using their flash when taking pictures.)
