...and have rules in place to protect me...even when I'm in pre-grid thinking about how stupid a certain rule is with my head in some guys lap as he tries to remove the GoPro that's safety wired onto my helmet....
Michael Schumacher's Ski Accident Brain Injury Said to Be Caused by his GoPro Helmet Cam

So the helmet supposedly shattered because of the gopro and they blame the gopro, not the quality of the helmet???

Cliff's Notes:
The helmet cam is still a question, not a certainty, in Shumacher's brain injuries
If the cam was adhesively stuck on with that crazy 3m stuff the normal GoPro mounts use, I can see the GoPro acting as a lever causing an initial tear in the shell ('cause that 3m stuff will NOT let go without a fight) that chains into a worse than normal shell failure allowing for more energy reaching the skull.

If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.
Well, it was a snowboarding helmet. I have one, it seems to be somewhere between the sturdiness of a bicycle helmet and a motorsports helmet. I could see the GoPro getting between the helmet and whatever he hit and causing more damage than there would have been otherwise.

If a $50 camera case is stronger than a $200 helmet.... Also what kind of angle could he possibly hit at where the camera would break the helmet? Unless he got piledriven into the tree the camera would just fly off
Sounds like a convenient way to point blame...
when the title is bold enough to say "...brain injury said to be caused by his GoPro helmet camera" ... I would expect to hear about how and why
the research group didn't conclude anything

Hmmm...by that logic, a $20 sledgehammer would be no match for my $600 Arai.....and the $10,000 section of air fence was a piece of crap because my $3,000 race bike totally thrashed it. (I have no idea what an airfence actually costs, just guessing)
I'll stop being cheeky, I get your point, but what people have got to remember is that a helmet by design will compress / deform / even break a little bit to absorb the impact (of a blunt object). A snowboarding helmet, especially, is more made up of foam with a fairly thin plastic shell.
A gopro case, on the other hand, is filled by a camera, which isn't a hollow object. So if a 2" camera gets totally crushed, it becomes an object that is, let's say 1.5" taller than whatever object he ran into. It would not necessarily be blunt, so it could do a lot of damage.
You run the same risk just hitting a branch / stick / rock with one of those helmets, the important thing to think about is that by mounting a camera on your helmet, you're really increasing the chance that object is going to wind up between you and anything that your head hits.
I used to mount my gopro on my helmet when snowboarding. I'll definitely be reconsidering that, even if that turns out to not be what caused the problem in this particular case.

Adding anything to a helmet designed to shed energy is a bad idea. That means inside and outside - no way around it.

I can see the post focusing the energy onto a smaller point in the helmet, but what if I hit a pointy rock? I'm pretty sure smashing his head into a rock is what caused the brain injury.

I touched on this in an earlier post - it's probably right that it is no worse than hitting a pointy rock.... The chance of that happening is the combination of the probabilities of several things. But if you attach the pointy rock (camera) to your helmet, you have just made the probability of a rock being in that spot = 1.
Getting hit by an airplane when you're standing in your back yard is a freak accident, the combination of lots of little bits of bad luck. Getting hit by a plane when you're standing on a runway is all but guaranteed.

right.. so mounting anything to the helmet may not be a good idea.. i just cant stand how its is written in an attempt to blame gopro...
its not the camera its the operator..
id assume now that someone might sue gopro.. not sure how other countries do it but here, i would not be surprised if it happen and then made it into our judicial system.
like when someone gets hurt breaking into your house and then sues you for an unsafe env...
