I played on used takeoffs from other riders at the end of last year and will probably continue that trend for at least the first two race weekends of this year. The tires are definitely not the limiting factor for me. That being said, if I was eyeballing running LWSB and GTL this year, what should I be looking for in regards to takeoffs or even potentially purchasing new? I've only ever run on used Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa's which is a DOT approved tire. I think I can run on slicks for LWSB and GTL?
Second question is in regards to rain tires. I'd like to purchase a set to mount up and keep on my spare rims. Any thoughts between the different brands?
Bike is a 1st gen SV650.
I need to spread these purchases out over time as buying them all at the first race weekend would certainly raise the wife's eyebrows.
Thanks!
Fitz
My bad. I thought I posted this in the Pit Area.

I hear theres a fantabulous group of gentlemen that will be vendoring some tires that start with the letter P, but I dunno.
As far as slicks or DOTs, pick what classes youre gonna run, and unless slicks are legal in all of them, run DOTs, they arent gonna hold you back much if at all in the classes where you COULD run slicks, and itll save you some tire changing.
IMO, disregard the usage of slicks altogether at this point.
As far as rains, I think you'll be impressed with anything you choose.
I saw what the Pirelli rains did for Erik (apollomx681) on his SV. Pretty impressive to say the least.
I've heard good things about the BostonMoto group.![]()
I'm pretty sure slicks are legal in both LWSB and GTL.
Putting the cart before the horse am I?? When I started racing cars back in '95, the use of slicks was highly discouraged for new racers because of the characteristics of the tires; virtually no warning either audibly or by feel before they let go, and they let new racers hold stupid lines. Is this the same with slicks on bikes?IMO, disregard the usage of slicks altogether at this point.
I took a look on BostonMoto's site but didn't see any pricing. About how much will the rains set me back?
Thanks mods for moving my post.

We have almost 5000 tires coming in starting next Monday. I will be having a HUGE DOT and slick sale closing out the Pilot Power Race line and about 200 sets of slicks.
This will be along the lines of my sale a couple years ago with sets hopefully going for the similar price of about $240.00 shipped.
I won't know the exact pricing until after Christmas but I know this will be a screaming deal with people wanting to race and tires a very large part of the racing bill.
I'm working a deal with Jay for a little NESR site sponsorship. When this is ready, you'll see it posted here. Motorace is gonna have a Michelin sale!

Sorry Mark. They are still current inventory. Nothing closed out.
I'm afraid to see the 2009 pricing on slicks like SMR's. You are gonna see over $400.00 for new stock on all new stuff for sure.![]()

Rains will set you back about 4 bills.
They're expensive, but they are an investment. They will last forever as long as you don't run them in inappropriate conditions (i.e., run them in the dry and you'll tear them up in one race). Take care of them and on an SV they will probably last you more than one season.
I have Pirelli Diablo Rains, SC1 front and rear... just bought them in september from BostonMoto

I run the pirelli Diablo Corsa They will last you a decent amount of races until you get fast. I found they last longer and are all around a better Tire then the Dragons. When times get tough I find if I need to I can run 2 Rears to every front. If you have spare rims I find it also economical to Mount take-offs on the spare rims and use them for Trackdays or Thursday friday practices. and save the Good stuff for the races. Dots or slicks I would not worry about running slicks at a slow pace who would not know the diffrence.
Oh and make Nice with your tire guy.
Also If your a Novice the GTL is not a good Value as I Have only seen 2 in two Years run a full 20 Minutes, THey are often shorter then a Normal sprint because of crashes and Red Flags.

the only class the sv runs in that slicks are illegal is LWSS. you can still run GTL, Thunderbike, LW SB, LW GP on slicks.

I have some rains that aren't going to be quite good enough for me but will do the job for you very well. Still super soft, just a little warn, only used for a few races and never in drying conditions.
I raced the motard all year on takeoffs, it's a different beast but I put down respectable lap times. You won't need slicks, and probably won't notice their benefit other than a longer life until you put some time in.
Additionally regarding slicks, they (and DOT tires) have come a LONG way, and the "slip or grip" (at least with Pirellis) is mostly a thing of the past. Heat cycling is also not as much of an issue with current generation tires, both of these factors are largely due to the ever increasing complexity of carcass construction and compounds used. So yes, you could definitely go with a slick and benefit from the added traction and longer wear characteristics, but as Daviid points out... you'll be SOL from running them in many LW classes. Go with a current / latest gen DOT tire, you'll be very, very impressed especially if you haven't ridden hard on one in a while... they're loads better than what I was using in 2003...
