No one uses it because they've always been provided.
I was thing about it too. It's only a $40 difference.
CCS used to make everyone put their transponders on the tail. It was kinda nice having everyone have to put it in the same spot but LRRS doesn't care so a lot of people try to put them as far forward as possible. The wired one looks smaller and could really go anywhere provided the wire is long enough.

AMB recommends a verticle mount with the antenna end pointing straight down at the pavement. In the interest of accuracy, they should all be mounted on the front fork. When I worked in Timing and Soring, there were a lot of issues caused by inconsistent mounting.
The only drawback to a wired transponder is when you're running more than one bike. It's not that easy to switch.

IMO...fork leg is good place to destroy a transponder in a crash, as is the tail. I have mine mounted on top of the triple tree. I figured it would be pretty tough to fuck that up.

I don't think anyplace is safe on the fork. And now that people have to fork out $400 of their own money people may reconsider these things.
You said its between the tripled behind the failing. Potentially the fairing could impact the transponder in a crash. The only time I've ever seen damage to the top of the triple is when someone loops it or fails at a stoppie. I guess it could happen where ever you put it though.
