In the past I've done this. . .

Once the tank is drained and off, put about a pound of drywall screws in the tank and "swoosh" them around a bit. This will knock off any loose rust in the tank.

get all the screws out, rinse with kerosene, drain, let dry. then "kreem" the tank.

    That's rough for sure.
The condition of the fasteners that hold the gas cap to the tank are enough to raise my red flags.

You will need a new "in tank" filter and for sure a fuel tap rebuild kit.
I can only imagine your float bowls.

    Time for a cleaning.

    Re: 1988 Ninja problems

    This is srikar's generator belt.

i would say it isn't in tip-top condition.

Plus my eyes are burning from sitting near the bike while it is running. Can you say unburnt fuel?

Needs a shopping list of stuff to be put right but for now a generator belt is the #1 priority.

    Re: 1988 Ninja problems

    Finally....my bike's running again...thanks to Degsy!

well...as all of us here thought...it did not turn out to be the rust in fuel tank or petcock. it was the alternator belt. Degsy ordered for one and installed it and the bike runs fine. I rode it for over 60miles without any problems so far.

Thanks to everybody for your help and suggestions.

Now...i want to go on a good ride this weekend.

    Re: 1988 Ninja problems

    You are welcome Srikar.

FYI everyone. This bike need a lot of attention this coming winter. For now I told Srikar to just ride it and get through the summer/fall. He is trying to contact TLRman as the carbs are not right. The boots from the airbox to the carbs are not connected for one thing (there is a big gap between the boots and the carbs, massive air leak!!!! the bike runs, but it has massive stumbles and doesn't make half the power it should, but it does get him from a to b at this point.

    Winter projects:

    New chain and sprockets
New fastners and clips all around the bike.
    kreem the tank.
    Get the carbs installed correctly.

Lesson learned. Don't go to Craigslist mechanics. There is a reason they are advertising on craigslist. There is also a reason that it takes a while to get a bike into or to contact a decent mechanic. They are busy and doing the job right takes time.

    Smile Re: 1988 Ninja problems

    yea...lesson learnt by me!

well....i have a lame reason for going to craigslist instead of posting here for help . i thought i might get branded as 'always asks for help' guy over here ....but after this experience....i see how friendly everybody over here is.

I did not ask TLRman for the carbs thingy yet. I am outta cash right now and will have to wait sometime for this.

Nice meeting you dbkromz. will you be coming for the ERC course on june 21st ?

And Degsy....As you said, my bike is good enough for carrying me from A to B. I experience the lag in the initial pickup from 0mph to 20mph....but after dat, the bike pulls well. Its a problem in stop-go traffic.
Thank you once again, for all the patience, time and generosity in helping me out.

Well...its about the chain and sprockets....the guy who sold me this bike told me that he installed a brand new set of chain/sprockets recently. I also remembering seeing them, the chain did not have as much oil/greese on it and the sprocket was sorta shining. Thats how I confirmed the seller was telling the truth. But I did not observe that after taking my bike from the craigslist mechanic. I started doubting him the moment you mentioned the slacky chain set. But I guess, nothing can be done about it right now, except for me to buy a new set and install them and ofcourse...never to trust CL completely.
