2006 BMW G650X won't start... anyone familiar with these?

I'm posting this to try to help a friend, and unfortunately I won't be able to get to the bike until I go back home next month. But I'd like to diagnose it as best as possible, so I can bring down any parts I might possibly need.

The bike gets power and everything turns on (gauges, lights, etc.); but when he hits start, nothing happens. No click, nothing.

To me, it sounds like the starter relay may be bad. I'm just looking for confirmation, or any other possibilities.

If the starter was the case and not the relay, then I would think you could at least hear the relay click, attempting to send power to the starter.


Educated thoughts and opinions?

Switches on those are famous for failure, and there is a recall for the harness rubbing on the frame around the upper right side by the rear preload adjuster. My guess if the battery is good (they do fail alot on the g/f models) would be the starter switch. If not bang on that starter....

Use a meter to see if you're getting 12v to the solenoid and if you get voltage on the start trigger when you hit the button. If yes, move on to the solenoid, if no, inspect the wiring and switch.

Manually bypass the starter solenoid with a handy solenoid tester*. That'll determine if the starter/etc are good. If that passes, new solenoid time.

* Screwdriver you don't like with a nice insulated handle to jumper across the solenoid posts.

Yes, I had suggested running a jumper wire from the battery to the starter. Hopefully these are the only potential issues, and it shouldn't take too much work to fix.
