    ALOC bolts??

I got the wave rotors I bought from eBay in today and wanted to mount them tonight. But the service manual says that the 12 bolts that hold the 2 rotors are ALOC bolts and should be replaced.

I tried finding what ALOC means. Anyone have a clue? And why do they say to replace them?

ALOC bolts are a fave of Honda. They are technically SUPPOSED to be used only once. They are used on the brake calipers and rotors. They supposedly can only be properly torqued once and after that thew threads are deformed and they cannot be reused.

I have probably taken out and reused my brake caliper bolts 50 times on my f4i with no problems. I guarantee that Honda shops won't even change the bolts to new ones each time.

Just reuse the old ones and put a dab of medium or high strength loctite on them.

If you order new ones, be prepared to drop about $30 on them, at least.

Yeah, my "discount" OEM parts place lists them at $1.62 each ($19.44 for 12), plus shipping. They retail at about $2.50 each at the dealership.

Funny that I didn't get as concerned when I reused the caliper bolts. Like Degs said, I just dropped some blue loctite on the bolts.

Well, if someone who rides as friggin hard as Derek does reuses the bolts, somone who rides as mediocre as I do can as well.

Now the next DUMB question . . .

Are Galfer wave rotors omni-directional? My stock rotors have arrows for the direction of rotation, wheres the Galfers do not.

How do I know which rotor is right and which is left?

but once you use them, keep them on the same side if you ever remove them in the future.

Hoo boy. I actually got them used off eBay. (yeah, I have 3 votes that they're warped.)

How do I determine which direction they were rotating in previously?

You don't. You put them on, with brand new pads, and let them "re-break-in" so to speak. From then on, you keep the direction the same.

    I AM SUCH A @#$%^&* AMATEUR!

    HELP!!

I got the wave rotors installed, but while reinstalling the front wheel, I snapped not one, but TWO FUCKING pinch bolts. One I managed to get out, but the other is stuck inside.

Any suggestions as to how to get it out?

Also, I now have a single pinch bolt on either side of the front wheel. Would it be safe to ride Sunday?

ARGH! No wonder I leave maintenance to professionals.

    Re: ALOC bolts??

Well, I did get the broken bolt out. I hit up Lowes for a screw extractor, but as soon as I put the drill bit to the bolt, it spun right out of the hole.

Now all I need are 2 new pinch bolts. I hope they're in in-stock item.

    Re: ALOC bolts??

Well, there is hope for a Sunday ride. Every Fireblade ever made (900, 929, 954, 1000) and 600Fx all have the SAME pinch bolts, so there is a SLIM chance that a dealer may have them in stock.

    *let's hope*

You're right. I was looking at the service manual torque value chart and read the wrong bolt. No wonder it snapped. I was setting it at 36, which is for the lower fork bridge pinch bolt. They list the axle pinch bolts as the axle holder bolts, which as you stated, are supposed to be 16 ft lbs.

So yes, I am THAT stupid. My question is, is it safe to ride with a single pinch bolt? I am hoping that Cycles 128 will have some in stock when I drive through that area to help Mark out tomorrow. But, if you have room, by all means, bring a couple. I may need them.

I told you I was an amateur.

This is what I get for listening to people. "It's easy to do this"

Not for idiots like me. It's a wonder the bike still runs at all.
