Need ideas removing clutch lever (the nut it swings on)

And i'm not talking about me!

Need to switch clutch levers today because the one on there is busted. And I've got TTD tomorrow...

The nut just spins and spins. It doesn't want to catch on a thread for it to back out... Any thoughts on how to remove it that don't require 3-5 hands? I'm hoping to do this before I show up to Thompson tonight. Or does anyone have a second gen sv clutch perch or whatever it is that the clutch lever attached to is called?

So the bolt is stripped? I would use my third hand to apply as much pressure as possible to the end of the bolt while using my other two hands to try to get it to catch the threads.

I don't think it's the bolt. The NUT (and I think it's one of those that has a nylon on it) doesn't seem to want to grab the bolt. I think I overtightened when I put this on. Mind you I have no way if the bolt itself is stripped.

I rarely see nuts strip... (??) Either way, my three handed technique should work. LMAO

If it spins (I'm assuming you're holding the nut w/ a wrench), then it's stripped. I would just cut the sucker off using a dremel w/ a cutting disc. You might be able to salvage the bolt depending on which part is stripped.

If you need to borrow a perch & lever assembly, I do have at least a couple laying around for other brand bikes but should work fine.

Access looks tight, but I would also cut with a dremel. I don't know how racing even existed before the dremel...

Do you have an air gun? If yes, try that, if no...

What does the "other side" look like? Can you grind the head off the other side?

Sigh. I didn't want to have to cut. But I think it's the only way to go...

luckily there's a hardware store that usually carries hard to find nuts and bolts. I'll swing by. That or cyclegear. Every once in a while I luck out there.

Buy a set of pro-tec nuts bolts specific to the SV, or just any dirtbike. Best money spent on a race program. Can't be slowed down by a little dremelling.

Dremel for the win! Bought whatever nut bolt kit I could find at cycle gear.

Was the bolt stripped, but only on the portion under the nut? So the nut's threads wouldn't walk back down the bolt shaft? Don't think I've ever seen that happen before, but there's still time!

It was hard to tell because I had to dremel out the nut. But when it was all said and done that's exactly what it looked like. My guess is I over torqued it and just snapped the threads underneath the nut.

If there's room for another tip...

What I did was purchase a couple hardware kits from a shop who parts out wrecked bikes. Has proven to be ridiculously useful to have handfuls of OEM fasteners. The place I used was Suncoast Cycle Sports. They are a bit on the expensive side tho. SCCS Ebay store

Re: Need ideas removing clutch lever (the nut it swings on)

sometimes with an air gun, and maybe even an electric, you can get it spinning fast enuf in reverse to unthread itself

however, very likely the bolt that is buggared up is a special shouldered bolt

in my SV, I used KLR standoff bolts for my handguards, I may have an original around but doubtful I could put my hands on it
