Power commander absolutely needed for a slip on?

Look, I know it's a good idea to get a power commander if I'm doing any changes to the air flow. But really, how much of a requirement is it?

I have the stock exhaust + cat which I'd like to replace with a 06-07 GSXR 600/750 M4 Shorty CF slipon which will remove the cat. The local guys at my shop said I'd be fine without a power commander, but I've been told by another that there's a 50/50 chance it could ruin the engine by not buying one. Is that true? I've also met some other riders who had slip ons and did not buy a power commander.

What I'm looking to do here is change the sound and look of my bike, not squeeze extra HP out of it. To me, that's worth about 500$ which is what the install + parts would cost. But if I buy a power commander, now it's closer to 800$, which is not worth it in my opinion. So if a PC is truly a requirement for a slip on, I'll just stick with the stock I guess.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'd really like to hear your thoughts.

Yes you should get a PC or ecu tune without cat.

    it's never needed.
    then again, nothing ever is.

without proper mapping, you're motor will be running slightly rich.
so your exhaust may smell like gas when you hit the throttle & you'll darken up your spark plugs sooner.

that's up to you if you feel this is important to you, or if you can live with knowing what that exhaust is doing to your air/fuel ratio.

personally, i wouldnt bother for just a slip-on. i'd get a PCIII after a full exhaust and less filtered air filter.
your 06-07 GSX-R would use a PCIII, and not the more expensive PCV. so you'd be looking around $265 for a new PCIII. the PCV is for 08+ bikes.

It won't ruin your engine. Jim is right, it will run a little rich but it's not needed.

It will run slightly better with a power commander and custom tune.

If he's running a less restrictive exhaust isn't he going to be running lean (more air for the same amount of fuel)?

You'll be fine with just the slip on

As others have said, slip ons alone is fine with stock tune. The minute you decide to remove the CAT and/or alter the intake at all, you're in tune territory.

In all honesty, even with the stock exhaust and intake, a good custom tune will be better on the bike than the stock one. So either way, a PCIII is a good idea and relatively inexpensive mod for a much better performing bike.

If your running decat with a slip on I would highly recommend the PCIII, your bike will run lean without a matching a/f ratio tune. If you kept the cat I would say you could get away with it if you weren't looking to get better performance. I ran decat with a slip on and then proceeded to install a pcIII and custom tune because I wanted to ensure some engine life and avoid leaning out the engine.

Yes. Dammit. I got sidetracked by Jims post.

Of course it's lean, not rich.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll just skip doing the slip on. I'll just learn to love the stock look and sound :\

What I'd really like to do this season is to get my suspension set properly for my weight. Maybe I'll look into having that done.

You just went up a notch in my book. That is some sound logic right there.

I'm with Degsy and csmutty, you have the right idea going for suspension work over exhaust/ecu. You will be much happier with it.

I have had my slip on since 2005, no PC. Just did my suspension upgrade this year. Should have done them the other way around.

If you are that worried about your a/f ssc usually does a dyno run for charity with a sniffer so you could throw it on and take a ride up and find out how she's running.

Eta you can also check out the pc map list with your configuration and see how drastically it changes the mixture, should be found easily online
