    Rpm's = acceleration false neutral ???

    '98 zx9r with 17k miles....

    when cruising and shifting threw gears keeping rpm's under 5k (under 50mph) bike runs ok...

    .... once rpm's hit 6k (over 60mph) while accelerating, the power band hits like a false neutral, where its revs but no power is engaged.... very weird ???

    Is this clutch or transmission issue or something else?

    thanks

    I'd say clutch assuming it starts pulling again if you let the revs drop first.

    Not a tough fix if you have this to walk you through it.

    Another vote for clutch.

    Once you pull the basket, check the steel plates to make sure they aren't blued from being overheated. Replace fiber plates as well as any blued steel plates.

    Pay close attention to how the fiber plates come out as some bikes have one or two that are a bit different from the rest and typically go on the ends of the plate stack.

    first thing to try is to change your oil, use a non synthetic. sometime that works

    thanks for the oil tip...

    recently changed oil to 100% synthetic...

    ....if need to replace clutch (need to order whole kit)

    suggestions for recommended best brands???

    Barnett

    EBC

    OEM

    ....some say it's a do it yourself job or bike shop?

    are clutch replacements common? about how much $$$ to repair?

    If you were using non-synthetic before and did not have the problem , then thats the culprit. did you use bike oil or car? some of those high mileage blends screw your clutch up.

    Ya know, I didn't realize it at first but there's only 17k on this clutch. Are you sure it's adjusted correctly? For reference you want about 5mm of play at the lever.

    Hopefully it is just the clutch, and not the tranny dogs. Those bikes were reputed to have weak gear dogs. The OP did not mention if thrust resumes when he backs off the throttle.
    Clutch = Easy fix
    Transmission = Not so easy

    reg 10-40 kawasaki oil..... and she's riding good.

    I forgot that I used 2 different motul 100% synthetic in a pinch...

    added 2.5 quarts of motul 7100 ran out, then added quart of 300v I had left over from track bike...

    .....wow, glad it wasn't blown clutch or worse

    thanks

    I agree, its a cable actuation, not hydraulic, check adjustment (not just cable adjustment)

    those Motul oils shouldn't cause the clutch to slip. seems weird that changing it out to regular fixed it. but I guess it could just be what the fiber plates are used to and the synthetic is just too slippery for them.
