    WTB, Pickup for 3K

Could be anything, but leaning towards midsize, or a short full size. Mid 90s is realistically what I'm looking for.

    Whachoo got?

I could almost hook you up... my f250 is an 01, so slightly higher. 1/2 or 3/4 would help, but assuming 1/2 ton.

1/2 ton is fine. What are looking to get for the F250? Is that a diesel? (I don't know trucks)

It's 5.4 L gasoline... I bought it from hobbs a little over a year ago. He thinks I'm crazy for pricing it at $4500 but thats about what I want.

I put new tires, alternator, and 18k miles on the truck... other than that, just driving it.

Is Hobbs still around here? I asked him this same question a year ago. I should have bought from him.

I got my 99 long bed Ranger with wimpy 2.5l i4 from Hobbs. $1200, 170k miles... Windshield had a crack that I was able to repair well enough to pass inspection, needed new tires too. Timing belt snapped not too many miles after I got it but luckily it's a non-interference engine so I did the replacement myself. Also the rear brake line rusted and I had to replace that too... Regardless a great deal for a truck I have less than $2000 into.

    3.0 or the 4.0 Ranger

Just turned 180,000 (today, actually) on my 4.0 and it doesn't miss a beat.

Don't be sour on the Ranger, just avoid the ones that need 2x the sparkplugs as it has cylinders.

I believe that they've used that 3.0 for years in everything from a Taurus to a Ranger...

    Re: WTB, Pickup for 3K

My 99 Ranger has been pretty solid. Bought it for $1,500 and put in probably around $700 or so for parts and labor to get it running nice. Had to replace the serpentine belt, front brake rotors and pads, spark plugs, and air filter. It's got about 138,000 miles.

It's a RWD so I am going to fork over $400 to get some snow tires installed this winter and get some weights to put in the bed...last winter was treacherous without either.

If you were closer Paul, I'd tell ya to just drive up Route 28 north of the Epsom traffic circle. I swear, there's a truck for sale in someone's yard like, every 1/2 fookin' mile!

Shit Paul, I sold my 4wd Tacoma last year this time for pretty close money to what you are lookin for. I'd keep a barebones Tacoma in mind.

Jay, every time I'm in NH I think "this is the place to find my truck" but I'm never in the position to go shopping...

That's correct. They were flex fuel in both models for a while too.

The 4.0 SOHC in the Ranger was also used in the base Mustang until recently too.

I had a 2.5L I4 Ranger with the double plug setup that was solid, IMO. Although I hear the newer 2.3's are even better.

I was never impressed with the 3.0L. Solid engine, I suppose. But for the money and fuel economy, why not shoot for a 4.0L?!

After that I had a 4.0L 4x4 that was the balls. I swear you can buy parts for a Ranger at the local quickie mart while picking up some slim jims and a six pack. Some parts of that truck date back to the original '84 model. The bed stamping still has provisions for dual tanks.

My biggest beef with the Ranger was the small/narrow bed. I think if I ever go for another pickup it'll be a full-sizer I can fit a sheet of drywall flat in the bed.

    Re: WTB, Pickup for 3K

looked at an 01 2wd tundra with 167k today. The thing was rough cosmetically with some denting to one side of the bed, and a tailgate that won't open (mechanism is totally fucked). Truck supposedly up from FL. Looks like it as there isn't a spot of rust underneath this thing. 5 speed tranny felt tight and the 6 cyl. felt strong. Steering wheel a good ten degrees off center, tires smoked, and a brake light on...

Blue book is 3500, I offered 2700. Kid didn't bite. With a little tlc this could be a great buy for me. I would likely toss the gate for a net, hammer out some of the dent, go through the brakes, throw new rubber on it/align it and drive the shit out of it.

Do I offer a little more? Anybody know what these sell for?

It has been beat on. With that mileage, expect issues due to neglect. Even a Toyota can't overcome a neglectful owner.

    I'd move on....

    Re: WTB, Pickup for 3K

Now that I have my Ranger for sale, you should really sit down and ask yourself if you'd rather have a clapped-out shitbox like what you just looked at or a well taken care of 4x4 pickup that might be just a bit more than your budget but also that you know (or can easily get) the history on.

It needs tires and ball joints....and I can get the front end parts for $170-ish for everything. Just trying to avoid doing the work, quite honestly.

You know how to find me.
