When did it first appear and what is it for?

Pretty much, but moreso to cut back on threads full of "thanks dude!". There is a purpose for it and hopefully you guys can use it as it was intended.

There are currently no restrictions on who/what/howmanytimes thanks can be given, other than each person can only thank another person once for a particular post. With that said, if it's abused that will change...and those abusing it will simply lose access to this feature. Actually, it's already been removed from one of the perpetual dickbags.
