New here. Recently moved to Massachusetts from south Florida. Im 18 years old, been riding a little less than a year and loving every minute of it. Looking to buy my own bike soon, and came here looking for some info
Thanks for the welcome!
Parents divorced a while ago and mom wanted to move closer to family... so here I am. I really miss the year round riding down there, but spring is coming up so Im getting really excited.
I took the MSF Basic Rider Course a while ago, learned a lot of good stuff. Up until I moved here I would ride my father's Kawasaki Z750S and occasionally I'd ride his FZ1. I loved the 750, but felt the Yamaha was real big for me physically. It just didn't handle as well I felt. It felt a lot heavier in the turns compared to the Z.
Like I said, I was looking to buy my own bike here. I have been working my butt off and have managed to save $4k. I went in to a dealer about a month ago and sat on a lot of different bikes. They had a used 99 R6 and I fell in love with it. Seat height was perfect and I loved the feel of the handlebars, it just seemed to fit me very well. Funny thing is, I sat on the newest R6 and didn't like it
Having never ridden a sportbike before, how is the transition from a standard to sportbike? I hear the controls are more sensitive

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I do feel like I have a different attitude/outlook than most my age. Im quite thankful actually. It can be a blessing sometimes
I do like the sport standards, too. But it seems like there are so few for sale around here. I did like the Ninja 650R a lot. Never tried the SV650 though, I think I should look for a local dealer and go check one out.Welcome to the fray! Don't count out the sport standards... Have you tried an SV650?
I also have a few questions about private sales and registering/titleing/inspecting. If someone is willing to explain it in terms a human can understand, please PM me. I don't know anyone who knows anything regarding the MA RVM workings. Their website is confusing and the RMV office here doesn't seem to ever answer their phone...

Welcome! Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders and know what you're looking for. You have probably 2 more months before you'll even dare hopping on a bike up here, due to temps, so please head to every dealer you can and sit on every bike possible. Also, talk to the sales guys when you start narrowing down a wish list. The more they see you, the more they will stop trying to "sell" you and start answering your questions honestly.

in mass, I'd put a deposit on the bike, get insurance on it, for this you need the VIN and so on (I got mine through murray and macdonald) then have the dealer register it for you or help you register it. Slap those plates on and go go go.
I just moved to Rhode Island and the process is so F*cked up here it is amazing. makes me miss MASS.
Where in MASS are you, maybe when the tundra thaws, we can ride. I have a Honda VFR800. Sit on one of them, it is a GREAT bike for street, it is pretty much a sport/tourer. But I have had mine at trackdays and it was sick. it is more sport than tourer, trust me. You can get deals on them too. Plus it is a V4 which means torque ALL the way through the RPM range, not just at the top!
good luck, feel free to PM with questions, and congrats on being the first member to post on this forum and not be immediately insulted, stalked, yelled at, made fun of, or shown pictures of someone's nuts. (this can be a straaaaange place).

Welcome to the shortbus.
The FZ is a bit heavier than the Z7S......to the tune of 80+ libbys, actually. The Yammy handles very well for what it is but it does take some experience aboard that machine in order to squeeze the full potential out of it. Hands down the best nekkid bike ever, IMHO.....then again I own one so maybe I'm bias....
BTW; Does your dad get onto any forums? Namely the FZ1 OA?
If you plan on doing any extended-day riding, I'd stick with the standard type bikes. The current standard bikes do very well for themselves in many aspects. Full on sport machines simply do not offer the all around goodness that the standards offer. Bigger fuel tanks (typically), lower insurance rates, more comfortable and much more gratifying when you buzz by a sport bike in the twisties.Having never ridden a sportbike before, how is the transition from a standard to sportbike? I hear the controls are more sensitive

Welcome to the site. You have the right approach...which comes with a better life expectancy. I recommend avoiding dealers because of the markup. There are a lot of good deals buying privately. Check craigslist, NESR for sale forum, LRRS classifieds, ebay...others. I know a guy in NH who does a lot of consignment sales. I've bought several used bikes from him (including my race bike). PM and I'll put you in touch with him...although he mostly deals in hardcore sportbikes. Good luck with the purchase.
Title is easy as long as you read the title carefully when it's signed over to make sure it is filled out correctly. Make sure you get a bill of sale also. That can come in handy. You can take the title straight to a local insurance place and they'll handle all of the RMV, insurance, etc. for you. Very easy.

Its a nice bike for sure. He can definately ride that thing, though his 40+ years of riding trumps my almost one year.
He's not a big internet guy, so I probably doubt it. The extent of his use is usually ebay, email, and ESPN.com
I will definately be buying privately. I'll PM you about the seller, it never hurts to see whats out there.
And one last question, do I need to bring the bike with me to do all the RMV stuff? Or do I just need the VIN, make, model, blah blah?
Thank you all once again for the welcome and all the help
welcome...as far as buying the bike:
first, buy bike and get title and bill of sale.
Second, go get insurance on the bike.
Third, go to get plate and bring rmv-1 form (I think thats it) for proof of insurance and whatever else they tell you to bring and pay for plate/registration.

Super, thanks for the quick response
Welcome to the forum. Now is a great time to buy if you have the cash, just keep an eye on craigslist and something will pop up, such as...

Welcome, sounds like your off to a great start by doing the MSF class and having an open mind to all kinds of bikes out there. If you liked the ninja 650r you will love the SV650, I'd be willing to say its a better bike all around. I wish you the best of luck with the search, we have a few dealers here on the forums (noel, ryan, ect.) that may be able to find you what you're looking for. They are both great, and will give you the best deal imaginable.
