Hi all!
I just completed my basic rider course this past weekend and am pumped to get riding! I'm just getting into learning about all the gear: buying my first bike, helmets, jackets, gloves, etc...so if anyone's got any advice, send it my way!
Hope to see some of you out on the road!

Welcome... My first bike was a 97 honda F3. I'm an Arai fan, the Profiles fit my head well... look for used jackets if you don't want to spend a lot on leather. Get a nice pair of boots- I have the base model Sidi B2s, work well on the street and for track days. I wear reinforced jeans- the Icon ones- for street riding.
I think Ted at DuncanMoto is having an Arai helmet sale.
See you around.

everyone has different opinions on what to get for a first bike. I have to say that #1 is something cheaper and older because you will drop it or tip it over. A 'naked' bike without plastics is nice for this reason as you often just scratch a mirror when this happens.
For this reason, you can often get a $1200-2000 500ish cc bike and resell it a year later to another new rider for about what you paid.
I got a 1992 GS500e (not the newer GS500F which has sportbike plastics) it is naked and is light, has enough power to get you in trouble, but not so much that you don't have a second to think about what you did with the throttle before you spear something.
GS500e/f and Ninja 500s are popular first bikes. Cheap, light, handle pretty well, and awesome resale value.
Get at least gloves, helmet jacket and boots. eBay is great. I got used top of the line Sidi Vortice boots for cheap there. I say also get at least kevlar reinforced jeans. Personally I have an Aerostich suit, but I commute a lot, and the spaceman look isn't for everyone.

Welcome to the boards, get yourself some anti theft devices for your poor bike for those allston nights... Trip wires, c4 wired to the throttle, or park your bike next to a nicer bike.
Get your gear on the cheap www.motorcyclecloseouts.com. And buy a nice first helmet so you don't keep buying more of them!
