I use one of these and strike it with a 3-4lbs drilling hammer to make kindling. It keeps my hands out of the way.

I saw that price tag as well, while I think it would be preferable to a conventional hatchet for sure, I don't see a lot of advantage over a $35 Fiskars X7 that would be suitable for kitchen use, I see no other use for the NZsplitter other than for a kitchen cookstove where wood needs to be kindling size
kindling for my home heating I find simplest just to go to Home Depot and buy utility shingles (grade d)
2 bundles last a season, one or 2 shakes is enuf to start a fire and can be lit with a match
