Perhaps its going towards a larger sum of money. Perhaps she doesn't want a diamond. I returned a 2.5 karat, $8,500 platinum ring for a ring that cost less than half the money and was half the karat weight. Not all chicks want huge rings. Perhaps you guys shouldn't be such judgmental pricks constantly.

Love cannot be measured by the size of your jewels.
That's HALF lesbian to you, Mister!
And I didn't want a big, ostentatious ring because the only jewelry I wear is in my tongue. The ring my ex picked out was gorgeous, it just wasn't me. I know a few girls who have smaller, simpler rings... and they are engaged to guys who make ~250k a year, so it wasn't a financial decision.
And maybe its because I haven't popped out a kid or 5, but I'm not a size queen either![]()

There are also different grades of diamonds. I had a 1.4 Karat diamond picked out. My wife wanted a very small diamond instead, so I returned that one. It took months finding the right "Flawless" diamond and then I designed the setting, drew a rendering and found a jewler to make it for me out of Platinum. She now has a .36 Karat ring that is appraised over $8k It is a flawless diamond. So I do agree it is not always the size, but the quality and the thought that goes into it.
I was going to ask what kind of quality the diamond was for that price. That seems like a rather large diamond + platinum band for $8500. Not that it really matters, I was just curious.
My wife and I went through the same process. I actually let my wife pick out her ring. I know it kind of ruins the surprise of it but it's going on her finger for a long time so why not make sure she likes it. Plus I had it custom made so she only saw pieces of the ring, never the finished product until I proposed to her.
As a former jeweler I can tell you that quality equals a high price. My wifes' ring... which I designed and had a hand in making... is a princess cut .83 VVS1 color G. A couple of channel set square diamonds ( VS I) on each side all set in platinum.
A small stone but estimated at about 15K. I didn't pay that nor would I... diamonds are worthless pieces of crap only driven up in price because of the evil empire known as Debeers. Thats a story for another time.
Me no likey crash
