PORTSMOUTH — A Greenland man who teaches driver education at Portsmouth High School was arrested on school property for allegedly driving while intoxicated.
Bruce Syphers, 59, of 7 Fairway Drive in Greenland was stopped by Detective Rob Munson, the school resource officer, as he was leaving. High school employees told Munson they believed Syphers was under the influence of alcohol and was getting behind the wheel of a car. Munson stopped Syphers and determined he was impaired, according to a Portsmouth police press release.
Syphers is a contract vendor who provides driving instruction to Portsmouth High School students. He is not an employee of the Portsmouth School Department. The department has suspended his status as a contract provider pending an internal investigation.
Capt. Janet Champlin said Syphers was pulled over in front of the high school on Alumni Drive.
"He did not make it beyond that road. It's still a public way," she said.
Syphers was not teaching any driver's education classes at the time, according to Champlin.
"We believe that he was going to be teaching students later on in the day," she said.
Champlin did not know how the School Department would handle the classes Syphers was scheduled to teach.
Syphers was released on personal recognizance bail.
Syphers runs the Syphers School of Driving. No one responded to calls left at his office and home phone numbers. The work number message advertised upcoming drivers education classes in February and March.
A woman who answered the door at Syphers' Greenland home refused to identify herself and said she did not know where Syphers was. She also said she did not know about the details of his arrest.
