Goin' down to get my bear tag this weekend and hunting black bear for the first time. Question is - for those of you in the know, think a 30/30 is good enough to bring 'em down? Or is this possibly a good, legitimate excuse to get another riffle (yeah, I said 'riffle'). I like using my trashy ol' Mossberg lever action 30/30 and I'd actually like to NOT hafta get a new riffle (yip, said it again). I'm posting this question on a coupla others boards as well. And please, if you have no fuggin' clue you don't REALLY hafta reply...
BTW-As a landowner hunting whitetail, I don't need a hunting license for my own property. But to get my bear tag and/or muzzleloader permit (or any other 'special' permit), I hafta get one even for my property. Stoooopit. Amiright?
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
Will it kill it ... yes if a good shot but like bows, a little off and the poor thing runs and then dies bad somewhere else.
really should have something with more oomph at least 308
The only friend i know who does real bear hunts usually in Quebec uses a
3006 with hot 220grain soft noses
This thing's been as closer than 50 yards. With my 30/30, I'm pretty spot-on at that distance. I was half thinking a 30/06 MAY be in the cards though, although that expense right now isn't overly appealing...

.30-30 has killed more north American game than any other cartridge I believe.
Shot placement is key, any well placed shot with the .30-30 is going to do the job. Bwack beah's ain't bwown beahs. I say go for it.
Then again being a gun nut...there's absolutely nothing wrong with a nice new riffle.

Thats cheating! The mofo walks right across your road to the prop. What are ya gonna do - down a couple on the prop while waiting and shoot the bastard? Wish I could join ya for the drinks - doing my own at the house - what's up for this weeknd? (fri Sat, early sun?)

FYI...the apple orchard would work better. beahs is dumb like that, they'll literally eat apples till they hork. Easy to tell when a beah has been in the orchard, puke and shit piles all over.
FYI #2...I do not like beah meat. No cheating here. Well, this one time (a few weeks ago), I was toying around with maybe dumping some honey out in the woods to see what would happen. I do know people who would take the meat and I'd kinda like the skull to do a Euro mount with. But, I ended up eating said honey myself. Peanut butter and honey sammiches are really good. I bet beahs would like those too![]()

The .30-30 has been effectively killing deer, bear, and humans for longer than any of us have been alive. It has plenty of power for harvesting black bear up to the practial limits of the range of your lever gun.
If you want more power but still want a lever gun, Marlin has a variety of rifles chambered in .444 Marlin, .45-70 Gov, and .450 Marlin

I don't necessarily want more power. In fact, I'd rather NOT buy a rifle right now with the intent to hunt bear. This may be just a one-time thing, I KNOW I'll get one out there. I just want a rug, then I'm done. I'll most likely donate the meat to the local food pantry if they'll take it...

The 3030 will have much less hydro-shock than a real high powered rifle
At distance a 3006 has twice the energy than a 3030
do some research as to the number 10 kill zone for bears. I think a little sow would be as small as 140 pounds where a big male could be near 600
I hope you are a good shot

The last bear I shot was with an AR15 shooting a FMJ SS109 round.
One shot, one kill.
Shot placement was perfect, right behind the front shoulder.
He was running and after the shot, when he put that foot down, he collapsed and he rolled forward several times. Instant kill.
When I dressed him, there was a 5 inch diameter circle of purple jello around the wound channel where the hydroshock liquified the flesh.
If you plan on eating it, I strongly recommend stripping all grease and fat from the carcass. Otherwise it will end up as dog food. I ended up giving mine away to a sled dog team owner cause I did not like the taste.
It will be the last bear I ever shoot.
